I have a Playbar that my family had for years - always in the horizontal position. 

For some reason, all of a sudden after using the same playbar for years, today it has decided to disable the front IR receiver and enable the rear IR receiver, and none of our Volume control works anymore unless we point our remote at a 30-40 degree angle down towards the soundbar.  The Playbar is in its horizontal location as it always had been. 

How do I switch this back? I cannot find a setting to update on the Sonos App.

Go to Settings then select the ‘room’ the Playbar is in. Scroll all the way down to the IR settings and, if required, run the Remote Control Setup again.

This could be a technical defect. Maybe call Sonos before you do anything drastic?

Reboot might help.

Do not factory reset Playbar before sending a diagnostic and talking to support. 
If they can’t help you, a factory reset would be ultima ratio.

Wuhu… calm down. I just wanted to give that advice, because very often I saw users directly taking the big hammer and doing the factory reset. 
And also before doing the restart sending a diagnostic would be helpful, because after the restart all log data will be lost.

Nope! Neither did factory resetting. 

But the next day it magically recovered and switched back without me doing anything further.

Thanks for your concern!   But in fact restart, power cycling, picking up the soundbar and shaking it all about, as well as factory reset DID NOT fix the issue.

The sound bar fixed itself just sitting overnight - not sure what has happened.

Thanks for your feedback. 
Maybe it just was magic around there 😉, or something like dust or incoming light blocked the ir sensor.
