I haven’t seen a definitive answer, so I was wondering does the Play 3 for surrounds allow horizontal placement, or does it require vertical? I’m setting up stands for a living room, so I want the correct info before finishing installation.

For the PLAY:3, I don’t think there is a difference, and even less so when used as surrounds, since at that point it is only receiving a mono signal, rather than a stereo signal. So either orientation works, I’d concentrate more on aesthetics.
