I have a Sonos system consisting of a Beam, which handles my television output, and two Sonos Ones serving as surround speakers. It’s been working splendidly, but recently I purchased a Sonos Era 100 to connect my CD player via its line-in. This has introduced issues that I'm struggling to resolve. If I play the CD player through the Era 100 alone, it’s perfectly acceptable, albeit a bit limited. However, attempting to play it through the entire system creates a problem when I next switch on the television. Either there’s no sound at all, or there’s a peculiar echoing conflict where the TV speakers and the Beam fail to synchronise.

All I really want is to play CDs when I fancy listening to them and watch television when I wish to do so, with the system understanding which input I desire at any given time. Have I inadvertently created an impossible conflict, or is there a solution? Can anyone assist me, please?

In the room settings for the room with the tv, set TV Autoplay and Ungroup on Autoplay to “on”.

You state “the TV speakers and the Beam fail to synchronise”. When the Beam is active the TV speakers should not be working at all. How come you need them to be in sync?

Sorry, I was being a bit misleading there. What’s actually happening is that the sound starts playing through the TV speakers as well as the Beam - which, as you say, isn’t what I want. My reference to them being out of sync was merely to indicate that this is how I noticed both the Beam and the TV speakers were playing simultaneously, for reasons I couldn’t fathom.

The only way I’ve managed to fix things so far is to have the CD player playing through the Era 100 only, using the line-in, and to have the TV playing only through the Beam (via HDMI) and the surrounds. In other words, each element operates independently.

This isn’t exactly a disaster but I’m sure I should be able to get it working better.

What I’d ideally like, as I say, is to use the Era 100, the Beam and the surrounds for both the CD player and the TV, and for the autoplay function to allow me to switch effortlessly and intuitively, without having to keep fiddling around in the Sonos app every time.

Whenever I try to achieve that at the moment, the CD elements plays OK, but if I then switch to the TV it’s either playing through the Beam and its in-built speakers simultaneously, which of course sounds horrible, or on some occasions producing no sound whatsoever. Oh, and the CD sound continues to come through, unless I stop the disc playing.

I feel as if I may have created an unworkable set-up here, and that with my limited technical knowledge I’ve been a bit too ambitious in expecting everything to function the way I’d like. But I’ll persevere nonetheless!

I’m grateful for all advice so far and for anything else anyone might be able to suggest.

Thanks!

Which model TV are you using? There is usually a TV option to send audio exclusively to HDMI-ARC.

It's a Sony Bravia KD43X75WL.

I've checked those settings and they already seem to be correct regarding the HDMI-ARC exclusive option.

It seems to be a tv issue, from what you’ve described. Is the tv up-to-date? Have you contacted Sony support?

I haven’t yet, but I will do. Sounds like the best next step. Thanks for your advice.

Thanks to everyone for kindly offering advice on this issue. Somehow or other, it finally seems to have resolved itself; I must confess I’m not entirely sure how, but I shan’t tinker with the settings any further for a while in case I mess things up again!
