Hi

I’ve read a few threads related to this topic and most of them are over a year ago. I wanted to ask this question again to see if anyone experienced this with the newer TVs using HDMI eARC on the Sonos and the Apple TV.

Setup:

  • LG OLED C4 + Sonos Arc + Apple TV 4K
  • Apple TV 4K connected to HDMI 1
  • Sono Arc connected to the HDM2 eARC

Issue:

  • On the TV, when trying to switch the sound output to any other types other than HDMI eARC, within seconds, it automatically switches back to the HDMI eARC. I have a set up to use the digital audio PCM to connect to the mixer for at home entertainment karaoke. In my previous LG TV LED, I wasn’t using the Sono at the time and able to switch between the TV Speakers and Digital Audio without any issue while using the Apple TV 4K connecting to HDMI 1.
  • From what I’ve read, this is not specifically to LG, but it I more specifically to the HDMI eARC CEC Simplelink setup.

Temporarily Workaround:

  • I’ve read a suggestion on one of the thread, they connect the Sonos to a smart plug. Disconnect the power to the Sono each time they want to switch the TV sound output to use bluetooth headset or any other type of sound output channel.

Questions:

  • #1 - My question to that, if I keep disconnecting power to the Sono, doesn’t that damage the Sono over time?
  • #2 - Anyone experienced this with their setup. How do you solve this?
  • #3 - Have anyone tried to use an HDMI 4k Switcher and just switch away from the eARC to the Sono, is that a better option than disconnecting power to the Sono?

Much appreciated for your insight.

Hello @spktlsa, welcome to the Sonos Community!

  • #1 - My question to that, if I keep disconnecting power to the Sono, doesn’t that damage the Sono over time?

This shouldn’t cause an issue hardware-wise on the Sonos Arc, but you might get duplicate IP issues depending on how often you do this. Have a look on the thread below for more details regarding this.

  • #2 - Anyone experienced this with their setup. How do you solve this?

This does sound like Simplink expected behavior but in your case it’s an issue, which you might have better luck with LG Support.

  • #3 - Have anyone tried to use an HDMI 4k Switcher and just switch away from the eARC to the Sono, is that a better option than disconnecting power to the Sono?

Sonos does not support switches like that, but I’ve seen users in our Community mentioning how they got it to work. Maybe someone will reply here with some advice/suggestions.

I hope this helps.

When cycling power I like to give the device about 30 seconds between Off and back On to let the internal voltages bleed off.
