I recently purchased an Arc soundbar & Sub(Gen3) and wanted to connect my existing speakers to the Arc. Suggestions greatly appreciated.

With a Sonos Arc, you can only add up to two Sonos Subs and two surround speakers for a 5.2.2 setup. If you want to add existing third-party speakers as surrounds to the Arc, you need to get a Sonos Amp to power those speakers. The Arc will then connect wirelessly to the Amp.

Can I use a Port (with external amplifier) rather than a Sonos Amp to add third party speakers?

Not as surrounds.  The Port has no way of knowing what the downstream amplification level is, so balancing the volume is impossible.
