Hello,

while reading about the possibility to connect speakers to a video projector (via the HDMI of a computer), I understood that a built-in delay in the Sonos system would result in a gap between image and audio (about 70ms). I have 2 questions :

  • Would adjusting the synchronisation video/audio in VLC by 70ms solve the problem ; basically delaying the video by the same 70ms ?
  • That issue affects only the speakers 100, 300 and Five, or is  it the same with the Arc ?

Sonos soundbars and the Amp are designed to eliminate the 75ms delay, when their HDMI input is used, that you will get form a line in connection on other speakers. So to prevent the inherent delay, use a soundbar or Amp with passive speakers as the main speaker for your setup.

If you are using VLC as your media player, then yes you can adjust the video to the audio using those settings. Note:  The 100, 300 and Five only have an analog line-in, which is stereo only.  You cannot get surround sound or Atmos without a digital input.  The soundbars and Amp have a digital input (HDMI-ARC or optical), and are equipped with a special configuration which allows them to sync with a sub and surrounds wirelessly with minimal delay.  

How are you planning to get audio to Sonos speakers?  For typical home theatre setups, you would connect your Beam, Arc, Arc Ultra, or Amp to the TV with an HDMI cable using HDMI-ARC/eARC.  This is not the same as normal HDMI, and you can’t just connect the speakers to your PC via an HDMI cable, if that was your thinking.

Many people run into issues with audio and projectors, and they expect that they can use Sonos to wirelessly send audio from the back of the room (where projector and source) is to a soundbar in the front.  This is just not possible currently with anything other than bluetooth  or airplay, which is limited to stereo only currently.

Indeed I was thinking about a Bluetooth connexion for the audio (speakers in that case, I understand that this won’t work with the arc) from the computer to the Era 300 of Sonos Five.

Would it be possible in that case, restricting myself to stereo sound only and using the 70ms video delay to match the audio ?

I have a TV connected to a pair of Era 300s via bluetooth. I do not notice much of a delay, and it’s fine for my use case.  This is not my usual space for watching TV, it’s in the bedroom and really only there because I had a spare tv and it’s mounted, and the effort to get rid of the TV and patch up the wall isn’t worth it. I probably turn it on maybe once a year.

So, sure, you could do that, but you aren’t going to great audio experience and it’s not what I would recommend to do with a projector to give a good home theatre experience.
