Ceiling Mounting ERA 300's

Just read a very helpful thread on ERA300’s ceiling mount Vs In ceiling …..

I have the same issue. Probably easier than the OP on that thread. We have a rectangular room. But with a large triangular corner in glass. Long story, looks nice etc but not ideal for placing speakers.

The front viewing wall is perfectly symetrical and has just been rewired so TV, sound bar and other components are perfectly centered as is the viewing settee. The viewing settee has a left hand and right hand 2 seater settee perpendicular to the main viewing settee.

So everything is front is peachy. But the rear means the ERA 300 RHS would be over the arm if wall mounted. Not ideal. The LHS one not a problem.

Can use floor stands but I’m thinking ceiling mounted on a Flexson and use SW in app to invert the sound? The flexson appears have a long reach such that it could be in a proper position in line with the Arc Ultra.

This is the Flexson ceiling mount in question. not the prettiest but maybe works.

Install is no problem. The room is hacked and channelled to bits so that RJ45, power and decent audio cable runs to each position …. center, LHS F, RHS F, High level LHS F, High Level RHS F, rear LHS and rear RHS. I can easily run feeds into the ceiling and the whole room will be replastered and decorated. So a full hand of options is open to use …. save the unbalnced wall mount.

Question is, which is the best ….. floor mount or can I get away without loss with ceiling mounts?

This is the Flexson …

This is the decent symetrical wall with TV central and all the connections 1st fixed …. Not pretty but ...

This is the problem wall ….. with a double glass door eating up 25% of the wall mounting….

Floor speakers could work. Seen some nice Oak ones but loose cables are a bit Meh and prone to hyperactive grandkids. Ceiling ones are zero problem to install but would it be as good?

Would appreciate any input whilst we are at the dusty, painful chop at phase of work.

….. and from another angle

This sort of floor stand looks nice (the cosmetic is also a part of this …. trying get the lot done in white and oak) but unsure if it’s good from an audio point of view …. not sure just sitting on a wood plinth is optimum?

Nice looking stands. I’d follow the height measurements as the Sonos Era 300’s shown in the link.

On another note I prefer the minimalist aspect of the Sonos stands. I have a set of Black and White and they (stands) disappear into the room aesthetics. 😊

Thanks for sharing that. They stand a little higher than I imagined at 957mm but not a problem. And they do look good in the white and at a lot lower price point. Must say it had escaped me that Sonos suplied these.

We have a load of white and oak in the room so either could work nicely.

FYI, regarding speaker wires (power cord)….they actually are embedded in a grove that runs the length of the support pole and exits at the base of the stand.

Whew!! 😰

There’s just TMI in your question (and responses) to sift through. A basic hand drawn diagram (BEV) of where you intend to place the TV and approximate location of main seating area would be more helpful than the pictures. Using the KIS approach is always easier to understand.

Gotta have some fun with abbreviations 😂

  • BEV = Birds Eye view
  • TMI = Too much information
  • KIS = Keep it simple

100%. In my efforts to document fully it becomes a confusuion.

But essentially the layout could be considered a standard (traditional) 9.1 or 7.1 wired system with the TV central.

No, they will not all be used of course, just the center for soundbar, and rear L & R for ERA 300’s. But we are wired for any eventuality that Sonos may or may not wheel out.

So although the pictures make it look over complicated, that is what it is.

My concern was the positioning of the rear ERA 300’s which is becoming more comfortable now and indeed we have wired for ceiling or floor and as suggested up thread, we can test both essentially and see what best result shakes out.

Glad you are getting closer to a desired arrangement. Just a word of caution….

Mounting surround speakers in the ceiling is typically an all time solution meaning there’s no going back without bringing in the painter again 😂.

Also, any seating arrangement is typically fixed in order to maintain the best surround affect. So hopefully, there’s no one in the home who likes to change the seating every 6 months to a year 😂.

A rear wall mount might be the better solution to avoid kids and clumsy adults 😂. That also depends on how far the rear wall is from the main seating area. Thus my suggestion to submit a BEV showing measurements and the approximate seating.😊

That’s all I have. Best of luck with your Sonos!

Thanks. Yes I think I am. The dilema now (the every year dilema but this year rumoured to be a big Sonos HW release year) is whether to wait and see what is delivered, wait until a 25% sale, or just jump in and but now 😀 …. mind as you will see from the photos, we have a month or two’s worth of plastering and cosmetic rebuild until we ready to switch on and watch Balde Runner 2049. Oh that and the TV to go in there (LG W6) is not yet released in the UK.

OK…but what is the Sonos HW release rumor…is that short for “hardware” or something else you envision 🤔

Folks have been waiting for their dream hardware release, many of them for several years now.

I keep reading about ERA 500’s …. apparantly there is some form of design registration muted that suggests an ERA 500 unit.

Potentially no substance whatsoever but who knows? Also a similar thing with a new pair of headphones if I rememeber rightly.

And hopefully (and I have seen zero to this effect) … some return to the Pinewood concept. That’s just me hoping on that last one.

Yes we have a similar offer on certain products and groups of products here as well.

The reality is that the room rebuild needs a couple of months of work before we actually need anything in place …. maybe (just maybe) some new products arrive … either way we can wait a bit. And the TV which I believe is available your side of the water (LG W6 Wallpaper) in 77” form, is yet to have any realise date here.

I suspect these will be October/November purchases for us here in reality. No big issue in reality.

I've been asking for the Era-500 since I got my first 300. Fun to think of what it could include.

The three channel, L/R/C Amp, to serve as an upgrade to a soundbar for TV use.

Zero interest or response from Sonos, which could mean nope or next week.

Very few leaks about future products, fewer official announcements.

I’ve certainly seen no ‘official’ rumors about an Era 500, only speculation / requests from users.

No ideed this is only Reddit type chatter. Sonos tend keep quite tight lipped about these things. One of the reasons for the OTT wiring and room configuration …. doing the work then realising you didn’t cater for it would be deeply frustrating.

We have another week of cabling, testing, making good and certification then plasterwork which will loose another couple weeks to get it to a perfect finish. Then we will loose at least a month with cosmetics and dull stuff like curtains, curtain rails and door refurbishment. So not decisions necessary until maybe end of August. And indeed no point orderinga anything until the LG W6 is available here on the Brexit island.

So you never know …. we could see something. If not then it will be the next 25% sale and super fun order to place. Have to say  I can’t wait.

Fully with you on that Stanley. I’ve wired up with that Sonosequncer SW in mind. The reports read of it (including on this forum) appear surprisingly positive.

If the 500 does not appear then 4 x ERA 300’s (2 rear and 2 front) together with Arc Ultra and 2 Subs I would stretch to ….. and ultimately in the hop that Sonos see fit to add fronts at some point.

May come to zero but let’s see.
