I have a first generation Beam. Can I use either 2 Play 1 speakers with the Beam or 2 Sonos one speakers? I presume that I cannot mix them.

You are correct. 2xeither, but they both have to match. A Gen1 One and a Gen2 One are compatible, as is a One and One SL.
