My Beam 2 gen is about 3 years old. So far it has been working ok. Imhabe a Samsung TV and I use a Logitech universal remote, to control the volume on the Sonos.

we have had some outages on the network connection. I now having 2 issues.

  1. i can’t get any status lights, eventhough i swith the lights on with the App. (Ipad)
  2. the remote is not working, sort of. I have reprogrammed the remote, as I first thought that it was no longer functioning. What i see is that using the remote, actually changes the the volume in the App, but it does not change the volume on the Beam. If I use the App, to change the volume it works fine.

-Does the Beam an infrared sensor, that receives the command from the Remote control, that may be damaged?

-May a factory reset solve both problems. If so, how is that performed?

Thanks

How is your Beam connected to your Samsung TV? If it is with an HDMI cable, it should be receiving the volume commands via HDMI ARC, over that cable. If instead you have it connected via an optical cable, and the Sonos adapter, then you might be using the IR sensor on the Beam to pick up the remote’s volume commands.

Performing a factory reset is relatively destructive to all sorts of useful data. Instead I would recommend a power cycle, of both the TV set and the Beam, by simply unplugging each from the wall for two minutes, then plugging back in the TV first, followed by the Beam. That will force both devices to reload their respective OS. It wouldn’t hurt to check both systems, after that reset, for software/firmware updates.

If you’re still having issues, instead of the reset, I would call Sonos Support directly to discuss it.

When you speak directly to the phone folks, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

Hi Bruce

thanks for the feedback

The Beam is connected by HDMI Arc

Then it shouldn’t be getting volume commands via IR at all. I’d certainly suggest the reboots.

Just how does the command  that I press on the remote, invoke the volume control on the Beam?

@Johnny53

Did you manually check for a firmware update for your Sonos devices from within Sonos app?
I think there was a bug at using / adding ir control to some devices.
Maybe that also could have dealt with your problem.

When your tv is turned on, itself receives the ir command and pushes it as a hdmi cec command via hdmi connection to your soundbar.

And, to be more pedantic, the CEC command is carried by the ARC (Audio Return Channel) system over the HDMI cable between the TV and the Beam. HDMI has more bandwidth available (and more connections) than optical does, and optical is also a one way format, whereas CEC’s ARC has two way capabilities.

I did the suggested reset, and the problem is fixed. Thanks for the support
