I have an external audio input to the TV through AUX, and the TV is connected to Sonos ARC through HDMI, so can the sound of the external audio be played from Sonos ARC?

Probably. If you turn on the TV and set the input source to whatever you have connected to aux, it should play through the Arc. Some TVs may sense that there is no corresponding video and not play the content though. Best to just test it out and see.
