Arc Ultra now has a lower volume since the October 6 system update, anyone else have this problem?

Since the October 6 system update, my Arc Ultra has to be turned up about 10 to 15 steps to get to the same volume where it was before the update.  Also, if I play my beam ultra at 45, I have to turn my Arc Ultra to about 60 to achieve the same volume.  This did not happen before the update.  I’ve power cycled, turned off voice enhancement, turned ON loudness and everything else.  The update botched mine.  Did it botch anyonee else’s Arc Ultra?

That’s certainly not my experience. As a guess, with no data, is some sort of wifi interference, but it’s hard to tell.

Have you submitted a system diagnostic within 10 minutes of reproducing the issue, and caledl Sonos Support to discuss it? Do not factory reset any units. Also, don’t post the resulting diagnostic number here.

There may be information included in the diagnostic that will help Sonos pinpoint the issue and help you find a solution.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

If you dig through the Community you’ll find similar comments about many past models. There are no standards with respect to audio output and the number.

If units get “loud” at low numbers, users feel that the unit is “powerful”, but it is difficult to control at low output. There will be numerous reports that ‘1’ is too loud. If the next update changes the Volume control curve,  ‘1’ is no longer too “loud”, but the mid numbers will be need to be higher for the previous output. Full power output is always available at ‘100’.

I have the same problem. It messed up my living room and TV setup with an arc ultra, surround sound and base.

I’m now experiencing significant audio sync issues. And none of the settings fix it.

I’ve never understood why people rely upon numbers or hash marks to determine what volume is right for their ears. If two people are watching/listening to the same source 43 may be fine for one and low for the other which means a compromise has to be reached and 43 is meaningless.

Updates may change volume parameters but unless volume is causing the speaker to clip beyond a previous number it’s really of little consequence. In today’s electronic environment you’re dealing with much more than just analog components that were set with no streaming capabilities that today require adjustments based upon the source.

30 years ago what one purchased was good until the next model was released. Sonos on the other hand has the ability (to a point) to adjust for technology changes that can impact its performance until the max limit of adjustability has been reached (S1 vs S2).

However, if one feels there is a definite negative impact introduced by an update by all means submit a diagnostic as such is not beyond the realm of possibility.

I had the same feeling after a past update on a different soundbar, and what fixed it for me was retuning Trueplay. Updates can occasionally throw the tuning off, and a fresh tuning pass brought the low end and dialogue back at the volume steps I was used to. A few things worth checking in the Sonos app: make sure Night Mode and Speech Enhancement are off, confirm no Volume Limit is set under the system settings, and keep Loudness switched on. It is also worth power cycling the Arc Ultra and checking the TV audio output format is still set the way it was (pass-through or the same format as before), since updates sometimes nudge HDMI settings. If the difference is still there after that, the diagnostic route mentioned above is the right next step so support can compare against your pre-update data.
