Question

Arc Ultra + Era 100 Surrounds

Arc Ultra and Era 100’s

Anyone else have this setup and noticing that the Era 100’s as rears are doing less work with the Arc Ultra when compared to the standard Arc? I’m barely noticing any audio coming from the rears even with the surround volume turned up to maximum.  I swapped my original Arc back with the Era 100 surrounds and tested the same Atmos movies on the Arc and the Arc Ultra, and there is a significant difference/reduction in the signals being sent to the Era 100’s in the rear channels with the Arc Ultra.  Increasing the “TV Level” setting for Surround Audio in the Sonos app increases the front surround volume coming from the Arc Ultra but the signals coming out of the ERA 100 rears are almost non existent.

Is this behavior the result of how the Arc Ultra processes surround channels, and should be considered normal operation?

Why does getting a confirmation statement take Sonos this long to put out? The issue has been verified and is repeatable. WTF?

As a second point why are we here three months later with NO resolution to the issue? I have an ARC Ultra, sub mini and e100’s and this is annoying beyond belief.

I have recently bought the Arc Ultra and wondering if I should add two Era 100’s which seem to be on discount currently. Should we expect the fix anytime soon or resolution is months away? The lack of feedback and progress updates is very frustrating for such high-end products.

@Corry P

I have asked someone to do a 5.1 surround channel test with his Arc Ultra and Era 300 rears. He said that he could reproduce the issue also, but it is way less noticeble. He estimates that around 95% of the rear channel sound comes from the rears and 5% from the front. He wouldn’t notice it if I didn‘t have told him.

It‘s way worse with the Era 100. The most of the rear channel sound is coming from the front. The rears are barely noticable with 5.1 surround sound.

Sonos, we need a solution! Your behaviour is absolutely not acceptable. Or should we inform the media so that something is finally done?

Unfortunately, there are only two possible scenarios with regard to SONOS Product Development & Marketing considering the Arc Ultra with two Era 100s in a Surround configuration…

#1.  They never tested the configuration with 5.1 source media!

#2.  They have clearly known from the first configuration test that it does not work!

Continuing to Market and Sell the Era 100 Speaker as if it functions adequately as a Surround in a Home Theater configuration given the propensity of 5.1 media sources is beyond belief.

When I purchased two Era 100s it was solely and expressly for use as Surrounds with the Arc Ultra.  I already had two Play 5s as a Stereo Pair but my Play 5s are of an earlier generation and thus not configurable as an integrated system with the Arc Ultra as Surrounds.  I also had several Bluetooth Speakers that can provide room-wide audio enjoyment beyond the capability of my cellphone.  Consequently my new Era 100s only have value to me when the media source is 7.1 or better, otherwise they are boat anchors.  Had I known what I now know I would have sprung for the costlier Era 300s although I really didn’t have the room space for the larger footprint Speakers, and also I wanted to place one of the rear Surrounds on a bookshelf which is not too appropriate for the Era 300.  Yes, I would have gained rear Dolby Atmos, but my interest was creating a more traditional Home Theater sound.  The Era 100s lend themselves more to a directional rear sound.

I have found the Arc Ultra to be fantastic as a stand-alone soundbar and also extremely enjoyable when viewing and listening to 7.1 media or better.

Many of us pre-ordered the Arc Ultra and are very loyal Sonos customers, but our latest experience is very frustrating. At the moment the most easy solution seems to be that we upgrade our rear speakers to the Era 300. Could you negotiate a special Era 300 upgrade offer for us with your team? We just want to enjoy the 5.1 rear channel sound and don‘t want to wait any much longer. Thanks for your help.

I have spent much of my professional life developing software and integrating hardware & software into system configurations inclusive of script-based testing to thoroughly validate reliable offerings.  As such it is clear to me that Sonos can and has proven that the Arc Ultra with Era 100s as Surrounds does not function adequately with 5.1 source media.  We also know that the original Arc does work with Era 100s as Surrounds, so it cannot be a mystery as to what is causing the Arc Ultra with Era 100s as Surrounds not to function adequately.  The “Fix” is an entirely different matter given the complexity of the re-development, testing and the cost of the rollout.  Your proposed “financial” Sonos upgrade to Era 300s is of interest to me and perhaps a large subset of current customers, but certainly not all.  I would imagine the only real solution from a Sonos Corporate perspective is providing a true Fix.  Their (I.e., Sonos) alternative is to change all Marketing and Support material to specially state that the Arc Ultra with Era 100s as Surrounds only works adequately with source media beyond 5.1.

Thank you for the clarification and update.

However, one might say that it is not everybody who would wish to upgrade to ERA 300’s, even if they had the space and the extra budget, especially that it is deemed that the 300’s only partially work as  surrounds with the Arc Ultra, in any event.

I would say that the onus is very much on Sonos to get it sorted, URGENTLY.  After all they were quick enough to immediately accept what many would say was a “significant payment and expenditure” outlay for the Arc Ultra and Era 100’s combined package.

In my personal opinion (hopefully shared by others on here) it is now far too late after the event, to even consider having to change their Marketing & Support material and I guess only possible for future on line info, if no fix can be found to the current issue.

This whole thread pisses me off so much.

I just dropped count on a Sonos ARC Ultra, Sub Mini and pair of Era 100’s which are not even here yet and I just feel like returning the whole lot. It seems to me the biggest “issue” is Sonos being either incompetent or unwilling to address this issue.

Are they hoping for more Era 300 sales by gimping the Era 100’s?

Don’t be mistaken…Era300s have the same issue… the last comment of 95% rear 5% coming from arc is probably more like 70% rear 30% arc to me…

They doesn't care since 3 months

For exemple:

Since 3 years we want to be able to adjust surround distance settings when trueplay is enable, we are still waiting...
