I’m contemplating buying an ARC sound bar, my TV doesn’t have a HDMI ACR input.  I would use the included adapter, but how do I get the signal from the directv box to the TV?

With an HDMI cable. The TV is responsible for taking the audio, and sending it back out (in your case, the optical cable, in many cases, the ARC port) where you have your Sonos connected.

So I have a HDMI cable go from the Directv receiver to HDMI1 on the TV and then from the optical output on the TV (via the adapter and HDMI cable) to the Sonos ARC?

Yes, the TV acts as the input selector switch. You’ll need to configure the DirectTV receiver and TV to pass through and acceptable audio format for the ARC.
