Yes, they will give you a 5.0 surround system for TV and you can switch them to "full mode" and get better sound for playing music.

Are you trying to use your Play 1's as surround speakers or a stand-alone stereo pair?
If the former you can't use them as surrounds and/or to play music at the same time. If using as surrounds only go to room settings and as Stanley_4 said set them to FULL for music.
