Is it possible to hear the sound of a blu ray player directly via the soundbar and not via the tv?

Yes. I do this as my tv does not pass through dolby digital.

The key is to be sure that the Blu-ray player is sending a Dolby Digital signal, and not a DTS signal, which the PLAYBAR can not interpret.
+21Of it is sending DTS you bay be able to change it in the settings of the player.
