Hello.  I have a Sonos Arc, Sub and 2 ONE rears.  I have no problem with surround sound coming from the rears using the TV (2.0, 5.1 or Atmos) and other devices eg mobile phone.  However, when I play a DVD through my Sony 4k Blue ray player, I don't seem to pick up much sound through the rear speakers even when the DVD I'm playing says 5.1 surround etc.  Am I doing something wrong?  Thanks.

What sound format does the Sonos app say it receives when you are playing from the DVD?

What specific model TV do you have and what specific DVD are you testing? Is it a DVD or Blu-ray disc?

Hi response to 106rallye and GuitarSuperstar :

I'm playing a mixture of ordinary DVDs with 5.1; 4k ultra HDs and blue ray music.

The ordinary 5.1 DVDs says 5.1 on the Sonos App but doesn't sound like it.  The 4k ultra HD seems fine but the blue ray music just say ‘stereo’.  I've also tried a CD with 5.1 surround and that doesn't come through the rears and only says ‘stereo’.

Confusing.

The TV model is LG65CX.

When the app says you’re getting 5.1, that’s what you are getting.

Blu ray music is often DTS. Recent LG’s do not pass through DTS so you get stereo.

Make sure your TV settings are set to this:

Sound Out: HDMI ARC

HDMI Input Audio Format: Bitstream

Digital Sound Out: Pass Through

eARC: On

Auto Device Detection: On

Simplink (CEC): On

Auto Power Sync: Off

When watching Dolby-encoded DVDs, Blu-rays, or UHD discs, set Digital Audio Output on the Blu-ray player to AUTO. This will result in either Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, or Dolby Atmos audio from the Arc.

When watching DTS-encoded DVDs, Blu-rays, or UHD discs, set Digital Audio Output on the Blu-ray player to PCM. This will result in Multichannel PCM audio from the Arc.

Keep BD Secondary Audio to OFF and Audio DRC to OFF for all discs.

Which specific CD with 5.1 audio are you testing? Is it a SACD? What specific model is your Sony Blu-ray player?

Thanks.  I’ll try those settings later.

the dvd played is a Sony UBP-X500. A photo of the CD is attached.

That’s an Audio DVD. Reading https://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/dvd-audio they use PCM. Not sure if this is of help to you.

This is a DVD-Audio disc. Your Blu-ray player doesn’t support DVD-Audio but it will play the DVD-Video data on the disc. Be sure to check the audio settings on the menu of the DVD and make sure it is set to the 5.1 surround mix, not the stereo mix.

Not sure this will make a difference, but on the Blu-ray player, set the Downmix setting to Surround too.

Thanks for all the help! 😎
