Sonos Beam Gen2 increases Sony Bravia TV volume by 2 levels instead of 1

Problem description: before I used Sonos, I pressed Volume up on my remote control and the volume changed from 0 to 1. After installing Sonos, I press Volume up and the volume changes from 0 to 2. This is completely unexpected behavior and a major bug that needs to be fixed by Sonos.

What I mean is, what do you actually hear? Are the steps in volume indeed bigger than using the TV speakers? Are the steps too big? Is your complaint that you cannot get the right volume?

On other TV’s, like my Samsung, you do not see any numbers for volume when you connect a Sonos soundbar. Chances are this is a TV thing.

I have an Arc connected to a Sony and yes, the volume jumps by 2 steps each time. 
I had already read about that in some review before I buy the bar.

If you have a kind of OCD (I prefer even than odd 😅) you can adjust the volume through the app, or with the voice control (SVC)

It actually goes up by 2 levels, as displayed on the TV.

I did some more research and found bug reports back to 2020 so Sonos doesn’t care to fix for 5 years… I quote a (retired) Sonos employee:

the very basic incremental increase and decrease of volume is not yet a supported feature of the Sonos App in general. However, I will be more than happy to send this to our engineering team as a feature request in considering an option to increase or decrease the volume based on numeric increments.

This indeed looks like a Sony problem.

”What do you hear”. The display on the TV could be ‘just numbers”, and use a different scale for external speakers compared to using the TV speakers. So: are the increments indeed too big?

So, Amazon, Google, Apple, and now also Sony’s fault 😂. It’s amazing how many people involved in the Sonos’ issues.

In this case, nothing serious, because, no, the changes are not big, it’s just strange at the beginning. Now I’m use to. 

TV’s create the display. Some TV’s don’t display the Volume number in response to SONOS Volume commands.

The volume numbers or sliding vertical level graphic such as with AppleTV displayed on screen have no direct relationship with Sonos. My LG doesn’t interpret numbers at all just a plus (+) or minus (-) symbol. You need to use your ears to determine the level and disregard what you see on the TV display.

Although it may have been submitted as a feature request it’s the TV remote that is doubling the numbers via what it sends to the TV and back to the Sonos soundbar. Sonos can only respond to what it receives.

Also the visual levels shown for sound really mean nothing. The source determines what volume level is sent. Watching the same program on Netflix may have a different level than watching it on Amazon. When watching an OTA  broadcast have you ever noticed that the commercials are at a higher volume level vs what you have set.

IMO there’s no blame in regards to the TV nor Sonos as it’s the source level being received. Volume numbers and or graphics are phycological smoke and mirrors invented as a WOW factor to make consumers believe that their ears can’t determine an adequate volume.

If you’re married or have a partner do you both always agree that level number “x” is the sweet spot? In the end it’s always going to be your ear that makes the final decision which sometimes is a compromise between two or more people. 

​@AudioJack, diving through several posts in different forums, it seems it’s a common situation with different brands of TVs and sound bars. There’s no answer that convinced me, because someone says that it’s due the different scales between both devices, but I’ve seen that in my case both have a scale from 0 to 100. I suppose it’s something that should happen due the huge number of different manufacturers, but I don’t see that as a real issue because I don’t feel that the volume scale is now less accurate than before.

I suppose that engineers developing this systems could answer us with the real reason, but till this happen my advise is forget it because it doesn’t affect to the sound performing. 

It happens because the Sony Bravia sends volume commands in steps of 2 when using HDMI-CEC with Sonos Beam Gen2. You can try turning off "Auto Volume" or "Bravia Sync" settings, reboot both devices, or switch to IR control if available. This usually fixes the double-step volume issue.
