Happy to be corrected by someone from Sonos (or others) but I believe the system does something along the lines of Dolby Pro Logic interpolation of the signal when it is in stereo. It is just that the volume is so low on the surrounds, it really is hard to hear. I’m on a business trip right now, so I can’t double check this on my system, but maybe try going in to the room settings and turn up the volume on the surrounds?

Yes I believe it does a simulated like Dolby Pro Logic. Not a lot of info gets to the surrounds. I guess he is talking about some of the other like stadium modes etc. that some receivers have.

Ah, that would be additional processing that would add delay to lip sync as well!
