Can I combine my existing Play 1 Gen 1 with a One SL to set up surround speakers with a Sonos Beam? Or do they need to be a pair on One SL’s to function with surround sound?

You need to have either two Play:1s, or two Ones (standard or SL, of either generation). You can’t mix a Play:1 with a One.

Play:1 only had one generation. So, yes, any two Play:1s will be okay.
