Hi everyone, please take my thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I’ve been wanting to get myself a Sonos system for the LONGEST time, and last year was finally able to get hold of a ‘Beam’ for downstairs and a ‘One’ for upstairs. Loving the system, I saved up and got hold of two ‘One SL’s yesterday to try and get a surround setup with the Beam downstairs. However something doesn’t seem to be working with the surround One SLs and I’d really appreciate your help. I’ve tried doing some googling but haven’t yet found a solution. I apologise in advance for the wall of text but hopefully this helps save a lot of back-and-forth. Please understand that I am relatively competent with tech but am by no means an expert here, I just want surround sound in my living room.

Below I’ll describe each combination of settings I’ve tried and the corresponding result.

NOTE- While trying to figure this out I’ve come across many people saying they’ve been able to get surround sound working just fine EXCEPT on Blu-ray which goes back to stereo. While I’d obviously like everything working in surround I currently have nothing, so I’ll take what I can get at the moment.

Current setup-

Sonos Beam plugged into a ‘Sharp LC-43CFE6131K’ TV via the ARC HDMI port (HDMI 2 for this TV). I am not currently using the optical audio adapter as I was under the impression that using the ARC HDMI port was the ideal situation and that the optical adapter was a backup option, please correct me if this is wrong. I do not care about being able to control the TV via HDMI so if HDMI is the issue I can happily switch. The manual for the TV can be seen here (https://www.manualslib.com/products/Sharp-Lc-43cfe6131k-3929502.html).

PS4 (standard, not slim or pro) connected to TV. PS4 HDMI is plugged into a PSVR which is then plugged into the TV via HDMI 1.

Two Sonos One SLs connected as surround speakers. The Beam and two Sonos One SL’s are all connected via Wifi.

The speakers work for music just fine, but are intermittent with TV sounds as described below.

The only settings for my TV that I believe to be relevant are as follows and have stayed the same across the following tests-

Sound-                                                  DTS TruSurround -On (greyed out and cannot be deselected)

Digital Output-                                       Auto (other options are ‘PCM’ or ‘Off’)

Settings-                   HDMI CEC-          HDMI CEC- ON

                                                              HDMI ARC- ON

Test 1-

PS4 settings-

  • Primary output port-      HDMI OUT
  • Audio format (priority)-  Linear PCM

Sonos App reading- Audio In- Stereo PCM 2.0

Results-

  • PS4 home screen- sound from all speakers (but the SLs are quiet)
  • Youtube- sound from all speakers
  • Netflix- sound from all speakers
  • Blu-ray- sound from all speakers

Conclusion-

Sounds decent but the app is telling me I’m only getting stereo and therefore missing out on the surround sound that I’m after

Test 2-

PS4 settings-

  • Primary output port- HDMI OUT
  • Audio format (priority)- Bitstream (Dolby)

Sonos App reading- Dolby Digital 5.1

Results-

  • PS4 home screen- sound from all speakers (but the SLs are much louder than with previous test)
  • Youtube- No sound from SLs
  • Netflix- No sound from SLs
  • Blu-ray- There IS sound from SLs, but Sonos app updates to say Audio In has changed to Stereo PCM 2.0. Upon exiting Blu-Ray the app reading reverts back to Dolby Digital 5.1

Conclusion- The app seems happy that there is surround sound but the SLs are making no sound, only quiet static which is there regardless of media being played or not

Again, I apologise if any of this is me being thick but I’m really grateful for any help that anyone can offer, thank you so much.

With your Test 2 settings while streaming Netflix, do you have the option to change the audio settings to 5.1 on Netflix?

Cheers for getting back to me. There aren’t any options within any of the apps to change the audio settings, only the main PS4 sound settings. From messing a little more and some further research it does seem that Test 2 with the setting as Bitstream (Dolby) is what I should be selecting. When messing with different apps the results I get are-

Youtube- no sound from One SLs

Netflix- no sound from One SLs

Blu-ray- sound from One SLs but switches back to stereo

Sky- sound from One SLs but switches back to stereo

If you know, is it possible that some TVs simply cannot output surround sound? The TV is a 1080p set from 2014 and was fairly basic even then. When using the Youtube app built into the TV itself it also comes out as stereo. Seems like its refusing to give sound to the rear speakers unless it forces itself back into stereo mode.

From looking around elsewhere other PS4 users have plugged their consoles directly into the Beam using the optical-HDMI adapter rather than going via the TV, would there be any disadvantages to this like audio lag or does it seem like an OK method?
