I am assuming here you have DVD player attached via HDMI to TV. And TV you have hooked to Playbar via toslink optical cable.

The DVD player is actually a Blueray player it sounds which then brings in to question - what soundtrack are you playing from the Blueray player. You must play the Dolby Digital soundtrack. If the movie doesn't have a Dolby Digital track you need a blueray player that converts all sound to Dolby Digital as that is only way it will play to playbar (or pick basic stereo sound).
