Would you mind listing your TV and mode/year in this thread if you have tested it and confirmed it will pass DD 5.1 to the Playbar and from what source. This will help those of us in the market for a new TV and playbar.

Samsung UN*JU7100 series does not pass Dolby Digital 5.1 from HDMI to Optical. It does pass 5.1 DD through the native TV applications. This is very frustrating.

Either I don't know what I'm doing (very possible) or you may need to adjust some settings. Per the Sonos app, I'm passing 5.1 through my UN55JU7100 via every source.

I've done a little more research on my end and it appears that some devices will send DD5.1. The main device that I can't get to work is my HTPC, no matter what I do, what drivers I install or update to, I can't get the PC to send 5.1 audio to the TV (but from what I read, this could be related to the TV - during the HDMI handshake, the TV might be limiting the options for the PC).



It's all very confusing. My main viewing device is my HTPC, I don't use an AppleTV or roku or chromecast at home so it's very frustrating that I can't get the PC to send the right signal.

I have a Sony KDL55EX720 that was bought in 2011.

Last week (Oct 2015), I bought a Playbar and connect to the Sony's optical output.



I looked at the Sonos controller and was surprised to see DD5.1 was passed to Playbar from free to air digital broadcast. I also played a movie from Synology NAS which was connected to the Sony's ethernet. Sonos Controller also reported that DD5.1 was passed to the Playbar.



I sent a support ticket to Sonos advising them of my discovery. I was asked to submit diagnostic tests while the above 2 scenarios were running.



They came back to me and confirmed that Playbar indeed is receiving DD5.1 from my Sony TV.



So this model should be a good buy now, considering it was launched in 2011.

I also tested using Chromecast connected to the Sony's HDMI and again Playbar is reporting the audio as DD5.1.
I found this thread very difficult to follow!

I bought a new TV today. I was very dubious that I would get it to passthrough.

but....



I can confirm that my new LG 58UF830v from costco at a snip at £930 does passthrough. I am soooo chuffed I cant tell you.

Apologies if this one was mentioned already, but I can confirm that the new(ish) LG 55EF9500 (and presumably the 65EF9500) will pass through Dolby Digital 5.1 from sources connected via HDMI and will even transcode Dolby Digital Plus to regular Dolby Digital while doing so. It will NOT, however, transcode DTS to to Dolby Digital.
I got my new LG 65EF9500 OLED tv. I was so excited about this set. Sadly it does NOT pass through DD 5.1 using the optical devices from signal coming from HDMI. (in my case) Before I decide to purchase I called LG and was told that it will work fine. Of course, most of the time they are not correct. My previous Sony TV was able to pass thru DD.



Interesting, like the previous post mention, the LG55EF9500 will pass through the signal. Just in case someone is looking for information about this particular set.

Regarding the LG 65EF9500 OLED TV. Actually I was partially wrong with my previous post. With this model I can pass through DD 5.1 using the optical cable ONLY when I use the apps from the TV. Sources from HDMI like my Tivo, for example get converted to stereo. Any other member with the same TV by any chance?

First, make sure that your components (Tivo, etc.) are set to output Dolby Digital. Those settings will obviously vary by device, so can't guide you there. On the TV, first navigate to the Audio Out settings (Sound>Sound Out>Audio Out) and select HDMI(ARC). Hello. I got my Tv set the way you have it. No luck. Tivo is using Dolby Digital. If I connect the connect the optical cable directly to Tivo I get my DD 5.1 but not when it is connected to an HDMI port. It will only pass through the DD 5.1 sound when using the internal TV apps.

Ok, the LG 65EF9500 DOES pass through the DD 5.1. It does it with my Xbox One but for some reason not with TIVO. Thank you User385289 because you helped me.
Samsung UExxF7000/F7080 series (2013/2014) do pass through the DD5.1 from HDMI and out via the optical. I have ATV and a Cablecom (cable tv) box doing just that.
Anybody have any info on LG 60UF770V or any other 60" LG 2015 sets?

I'm looking for some advice, i have 5.1 sonos set up in living room at recently purchased the panasonic 55cx802b tv. I have the playbar connected directly to tv but can't get 5.1 when using sky, which makes me believe this tv does not support 5.1 passthrough. When i plug the optical cable directly into sky box 5.1 works fine. I also use ps4 & the tv's built in netflix so would like to have 5.1 working with everything without having to swap the optical cables round everytime i change input.



Can anyone suggest the best method to achieve this without losing sound quality ?

My exact same question 🙂 I got confirmed from a local high end HIFI store which I trust that the JU7500 series did in fact pass through 5.1 so I would be surprised if its big brother didn't but you never know with Samsung..

I'm taking delivery of a 75JU7100 in a coupe of days. I've done lots of research and am still unclear if 5.1 is available from the TV TOS."Some" say it works if you have 5.1 going to the TV. I'm assuming it doesn't and ordered a Monoprice HDMI/TOS switch and will use ARC to make sure all feeds to the Playbar (and surround sound using Sub and 2 Play 1's) are 5.1.

Based on the research I've done (mostly the CNET reviewers who appear to know their stuff and answer almost all questions), the Samsung 8500 can pass through 5.1 through optical from other sources connected to it. But, I asked them the question directly to make sure.

FWIW, I can confirm the Samsung UN75JU7100 doe NOT pass 5.1 via TOS from a HDMI input.



I'm using a Monoprice HDMI/TOS switch (http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=7974) which works well. I've got Charter Cable/Chromecast/Samsung BD/XboxOne feeding a Playbar, Sub and 2 X Play1s.



The only downside were the multiple remotes, which I solved with a Harmony Elite (Love it.)
Any idea about the Sony XBR65X900C or LG 65EF900. Thanks.
