not getting any sound through sound bar when playing DVDs. Disk player connected to TV via HDMI cable. Tv connected to the sound bar via optical cable. SKY TV through sound bar works perfectly, this is also via HDMI cable, from sky box to TV.

Check the audio settings on the Bluray player. It is most likely sending a DTS signal, not a Dolby Digital signal, and the PLAYBAR can't process that.
