Is it possible to set up a home theater using just a pair of Sonos Beam Gen 2 and Sonos Era 100 pair without a Sub?

The article above says that pairing Sonos Beam 2 + Era 100 + Sub allows for 7.1.4 expansion. My question is, is the Sub absolutely necessary? Is it possible to configure it as 7.0.4 without the Sub?
