I just bought a Playbase but directions ask that you connect to your TV? It's already mounted on a wall so don't want to have to unhook it from the wall. Wanted to know if there was an alternative?
You can connect it to any device that has an optical output, with a maximum of Dolby Digital for the data stream. That could be a TV, a receiver, a cable box, a PC, whatever has an optical output.
I just realized that I may not have explained all options.

You can also use a Sonos Connect or Connect:Amp to attach to an analog output from a receiver/amp and send data to a Playbase or Playbar.

The Playbase doesn't have an analog input that you could connect to a receiver, but if your receiver has a TOSLINK out, that would work.
