Dolby Atmos Arc & Samsung Compatibility

Hello, I have a Samsung Q90T television and a Sonos Arc soundbar. I can use Dolby Atmos with Netflix and Vudu, but only 5.1 Audio with Disney+, Apple or Amazon Prime. Are those apps (Disney+, Apple or Amazon Prime) not compatible with one of or both of my tv/soundbar? Does Samsung not support Atmos through them? Thanks in advance.

Hi @newbost.

Thanks for reaching out and for your detailed post, let me help and try to figure this out.

Please see this article that outlines the main factors that determine if your Sonos Arc can play Dolby Atmos audio.

Getting Dolby Atmos audio can also depend on the physical source device playing the content. Some TVs do not support Dolby Atmos audio even if the source device does. In most cases, the TV will re-encode the audio to Dolby Digital 5.1. You may check with the manufacturer of your device to see if it supports Dolby Atmos.

Thank you.

The issue is that my system will support Dolby Atmos with some platforms (I can get Atmos with Netflix, Amazon Prime, Vudu), but not others (no Atmos on Disney+, Apple+). I am using the native apps from Samsung and was curious if that is the issue versus using a Fire Stick or Roku or AppleTV.

Hi @newbost.

Thanks for your response.

We need to ensure that the hardware you’re playing it on has to be able to decode Dolby Atmos or pass it along to a Dolby Atmos-capable sound system without altering it. This is known as “pass-through.” As per my suggestion above, you need to check with the TV manufacturer if it supports Dolby Atmos.

@newbost

Not all the built in TV apps support Atmos, as you found out.

tcl 65r635. arc. using eArc hdmi from tv to speaker. one sl surrounds.

wanted to mention...i see people struggling....i find i only get and keep atmos on disney by setting tv output to DD+ DTS...yet passthrough output seems to work for netflix and vudu and keep atmos. still trying different combos. but the tv audio output setting needs changes per app from what i see. and disney app has an issue. so i am always passthrough to start then go to DD+DTS when needed. no way around this so far. good luck. ms
