Question

Can the Playbar connect directly to the Sony Bravia KDL-46EXE645?

I am interested in going with the Sonos Playbar but after reading some of the threads and not finding my TV in the list of known supported devices, I don't know if it will work.

The TV has an optical out (with the red light). However, it doesn't turn my current (crappy Vizio) soundbar on automatically when I turn on the tv. I have to mute the tv and then turn on the soundbar. And when I go through the Audio settings for the tv, there is NOT an option for "Optical output" where I can select "Auto" or "PCM" as I have seen referenced in some posts.

I am just trying to verify that this TV will work with the Sonos Playbar. Any advice out there? Thanks!

If your TV has the optical output then yes it will work. You will just need to disable your TV speakers, however that may work on your particular model.

The question is going to be whether your TV passes 5.1 via optical on your TV if you're looking to do a full 5.1 setup.
Thanks much @nifoxke . I know that the TV supports dolby sound, do you know if I can assume then that the optical output should support that as well?

I'd be hesitant to assume that and would want to confirm. I found the following but it doesn't really clarify about 5.1 pass through. https://docs.sony.com/release//specs/KDL46EX645_mksp.pdf

You could always just try it and if your TV doesn't end up passing through 5.1, you could get a simple audio extractor to strip the 5.1 signal from HDMI and have it output via optical. I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005E2XLI2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
