Hello folks,

i just ordered the arc ultra ultimate set (era 300, Sub 4) and just came across the eARC requirement and I’m a bit confused now.

  • AppleTV 4K (2nd generation)
  • Sony KDL-55W905A ARC only, DOLBY®️ DIGITAL/DOLBY®️ DIGITAL PLUS/DOLBY®️ PULSE according to the specs
  • I currently have an AVR via Toslink connected and it indicates Dolby 5.1 signal (not PCM)

I’ve read that esp. the AppleTV 4K uses a different Dolby MAT container that some TVs struggle with. But giving the fact I get a Dolby 5.1 it seems to work?

  • Does every TV that supports Dolby Plus embedded Atmos ? Can the behavior differ via HDMI ARC ?
  • How would the Sonos set behave “worst case” ? How many channels are active on a non atmos track (e.g. ERA 300 rears and height channels) ?
  • I didn’t plan to upgrade my TV already. Does the HDFury 1 (or 2?) Arcana already support the Arc Ultra?

thanks

I have a KDL-55w8 model of tv bought around 2015

via the Arc pass through I can get up to DD 5.1

to get Atmos I had to purchase an audio extractor - which works perfectly using appletv 4K, ps5, Xbox series X and even managed to deal with Nintendo Switches 5.1 support

I couldn't justify the price of a Fury box especially as my tv (like yours) only does 1080p

i did a lot of research before buying the box I have, and it's probably specific to my use case as I have all the above boxes plugged into a Phillips hue sync box first

anyway this is what I bought for my use case as it was only 1 hdmi that I wanted to extract the Atmos from - but finding an extractor that has EARC support on both output was tough on a budget.

The video output hdmi is plugged into the TV Arc HDMI and the EArc output HDMI goes into fhe Sonos - if I use any of the other HDMI on the TV though I only get 5.1 pass through but the devices connected into the other TV HDMI can't do Atmos anyway.

Only complaint I have with the box is that when switching from the Arc pass through mode back to the source HDMI with Atmos I have to power cycle the box, but most of the time I'm just using the sources that output Atmos anyway

The difference between using the Arc only direct into the Sonos and extracting the Atmos is like night and day on a good source

Thanks for the tip 👍🏻 after spending the money on the full arc ultra set + accessories the fury didn’t matter much 😂

Without additional hardware the output from the TV was very unpredictable.

adding the fury was plug and play, and getting the Dolby Atmos stream out of the ATV4 was worth it, even the TV is only 1080p
