Sonos Ace Ultra – TV Audio Swap suddenly unusable: random muting and connection issues

Hi everyone,

I’ve been using the Sonos Ace Ultra since launch, and TV Audio Swap worked perfectly for the first few weeks. I could easily switch between my Sonos Ace soundbar with two rear speakers and the headphones while gaming on or watching streaming services.

However, since today, TV Audio Swap has become extremely unreliable. I’m experiencing two different issues that occur intermittently:

1. Audio suddenly switches back to the soundbar at extremely high volume

Initially, TV Audio Swap works as expected when I press the button on the headphones. However, after about 3–5 minutes, the headphone audio suddenly cuts out and the soundbar turns back on at an extremely high volume.

At this point, I cannot immediately switch the audio back to the headphones. I have to wait approximately 2–3 minutes before TV Audio Swap starts working again. Then, after another few minutes, the exact same problem repeats itself.

2. Audio cuts out and the soundbar becomes muted

Alternatively, the headphone audio suddenly stops and the soundbar switches back on, but remains muted (indicated by the green status light).

This happens even though I’m still wearing the headphones. If I take them off and put them back on, the audio sometimes starts working again briefly, almost as if the system had incorrectly detected that I had removed the headphones.

I’ve updated the system, completely powered everything off and restarted it, but nothing has helped.

Maybe this has something to do with me almost lying down on the sofa, and the headphone thinks it is not on my head? There seems to be a factor in how I carry it on my head, which would be insane.

This is completely new behavior. Everything worked flawlessly for weeks, and now TV Audio Swap is practically unusable. It’s extremely frustrating, especially since this is one of the main features of the Ace Ultra.

If I’m using a very soft pillow, as I roll my head one of the buttons might be pushed. In addition the ACE may slip into a position where noise cancellation degrades.

i can imagine that very bushy hairstyle could interfere with head detection.

ACE ULTRA has not been available long enough for a aignifant number of issue conversations to be available here. I suggest that you submit a diagnostic within 10 minutes of an event, then contact SONOS Phone support. Don’t post the confirmation mere.

Head detection uses a sensor that appears to be looking for your ear in the cup, maybe enough hair could block that.

Easy enough to disable wear sensing and see if the issue goes away.
