Will the new Sonos Ace Ultra headphone be just another room in the S2 app? Or does it require one of the compatible Sonos products?

From the FAQ on the product page:
How do I link Sonos Ace Ultra to my system?
Headphone linking requires a WiFi connection and at least one of the following speakers in your Sonos system:
Beam (Gen 1)
Amp
Arc
Arc SL
Five
Roam
Roam SL
Roam 2
Beam (Gen 2)
Ray
Era 100*
Era 100 Pro*
Era 300*
Move 2
Arc Ultra
Sonos Play
Era 100 SL*
Beam Ultra
*Not being used as a rear surround for home theater

So guessing it would not link to a turntable hooked up to 2 Sonos Fives? I guess not sadly even if a speaker from the above list was also owned.

I've seen that. But I also saw (just below your quote):
Selecting audio content for headphones
- You can select content to play directly to your headphones by navigating to the System tab and selecting your Sonos Ace Ultra.
- Once selected, navigate to the Home or Search tabs to select content.
- Content changes may take five or more seconds to begin playing and show within the Now Playing screen.
Hence my question: does the Sonos Ace Ultra require another Sonos component from the list, or does it function just with the app?

I mean it’s already self-explanatory. You need a compatible player in order to link Ace Ultra to your system.
This is also confirmed in the following support page: https://support.sonos.com/en-gb/article/set-up-headphone-linking

Yeah I think I get it. Ace Ultra will only link to a speaker on that list and not some of the older ones. Odd that the Move listed is not the Move 2? Maybe that’s a typo!
- September 2, 2026
Yes, you can link the Ace Ultra to any compatible speaker be it stand alone or stereo pair even those with a turntable.
Once linked you can move about your home freely as the Ace Ultra will be using your WiFi.
During the link it becomes a room on your system and is subject to the 32 device limit.
It is not a room when not linked.
Edit:
It’s important to read the information in the link as well as the attachment (Note).

On balance, I will probably stick to my current Ace headphones as I mostly use them out of the house and for podcasts via my phone or with my Beam 2 for TV. The main system in my house I’d be interested in using them would be my turntable but it’s connected to a set of Fives so that would not work anyway. Luckily I got them via a sale here in the UK a few months ago for the now set price of £299. Would be pissed if I had paid the £100 more as was the normal price at the time. The only thing I would have liked is that new Stone colour but I ain’t paying £100 more just for that 🤣

What? Did you not read my post throughly regarding a turntable.

Sorry I am a bit confused lol. So if my turntable is linked to a set of Fives, how does that swap to the Ace Ultra if it’s not on the list of supported speakers? Is it the fact that I own another speaker that IS on the list means the Sonos Fives would link? That is the bit that is confusing me haha

On the list mentioned in this thread I see the “Five” listed as a linkable speaker. Don’t you 🤔

OMG - I am so stupid and cannot read properly - thanks for pointing this out to me! 🤣😀

Hold on - edit to my above post. Maybe I am not being so stupid but there seems to be a discrepancy between the list of supported products on the Sales page for the Ace Ultra, and that link posted above by Mr. T. His link says:

So unless I am being really stupid this does seem to be a bit confusing as to the product list doesn’t it. Unless I am again, reading something different to others. Maybe the list on the For Sale page is the more accurate one? Think I need to go and lie down in a dark room 😀🤣

Ha ha.., you’re just a victim as we all are of Sonos marketing not keeping things consistent throughout. It happens all the time 😂. Besides it would be “stupid” for Sonos to omit the Fives 😵💫

The Five is included on my sales page. Maybe they got it corrected or the UK version is still wrong?

Lol - It would be helpful if they aligned that compatible products between the sales page and the information page wouldn’t it! Especially for those who would be interested in the Fives and their ability (or not) to link to the new headphones. Maybe someone from Sonos could clarify 🙃

Yeah Five is also on the UK list but not on that link to the information page - that is the discrepancy right now I think. Very confusing!

Seeing as it was just announced, I’m willing to give them a little leeway (but not much!) on syncing the web pages. They should be the same, though, it seems a fairly stripaight forward cut and paste job, IMHO.
But I think the question lies on the hardware used when the Sonos Five was made. Was it designed with that capability in the electronics? From what I’ve seen, yes, it was, but not the PLAY:5 gen 2s, which I have, but they’re quite older.
i suspect the websites will settle down by the weekend, as these niggling issues get brought up.

Yeah I agree it is clearly just a teething issue with the lists being different but would be good if they could correct it soon so that customers know what the correct list is 😆 - be good if the Fives were on the list! At least I don’t have to feel quite so stupid going on about my Fives seeing as while chatting on this thread, I had Mr T’s link open as a reference. Hence why I was getting so confused around various replies!

It would also help with the updated correct list being in alphabetical order, which neither of them fully are. Sloppy quality control.

And seeing as the pre order is open and the list of compatible products may well feed into a persons reasons for purchasing, you would think the lists would be the same! Where a product is on 1 but not the other, you could not feel confident about ordering based on that product alone

It's still not clear to me.
I own 1 Era 100. I should link the Sonos Ace Ultra to my Era 100, then stream content to the Era 100, then swap the music that's playing on the Era 100 to my Ace Ultra, if I understand correctly.
So I can't setup the Ace Ultra in the Sonos app (without linking it to my Era 100) and stream music to it. Correct?

This is my understanding:
You have to set up the Ace Ultra in the app when you get it (like the current Ace) - this links it to your account and if like the current Ace, if memory serves me right, you need Bluetooth enabled on the device also. Once set up it will appear in the App when linked to a device via Bluetooth. Then with the new Ace Ultra, you can set music streaming on your Era 100 then swap the sound to the Ace Ultra headphones. This is something that cannot be done with the current Ace. That one only swaps TV sound with a compatible soundbar. I think this will be how it works…………………... Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

Think about it this way.
The music services are stored on the speaker. In order to play music on Ace Ultra from the Sonos app, you need a compatible player. If the compatible player is powered off, then the audio will stop. At least that’s my understanding from the support articles available.

Close. I don't think the 'swap' is using Bluetooth. Instead, it is likely using ultrasonic frequencies, so that can determine what sonos devices. I think you initiate the swap by pressing a button on the headphones, like you do for TV swap, and the headphones will find the nearest room playing audio and 'steal' it. If I understand correctly, you can then walk to another room and press the button again to swap the music to the new room as well.

I think there is an asterisk issue too, the Five and Play, are they really able to link when used as surrounds?
Or do they need an asterisk like the other similar speakers?
The web folks need to work on accuracy and consistency or they are going to generate unhappy customers and returned product.
