I’ve seen various posts stating that the Sonos Ace ANC exhibits various popping or crackling effects as a result of nearby high-pitched sounds like knives, forks and other cutlery banging together.

Examples:

Has this been fixed?

I understand the newer Firmware has greatly improved the ANC, but I can’t find a clear conclusion on this topic.

I haven't noticed that with my Ace, a lot has been done since the old topics you linked.

Interesting…

Reddit is 50 / 50 on whether or not this issue is fixed.

I got mine today and those still have this issue! Even with the latest Firmware.

I talked to the support and a replacement is on the way now. Will tell you when it arrives if the issue is gone.

The consensus seem to be that the popping and cracking noises from the Sonos Ace, described in my initial post, are still happening with the latest firmware at the end of 2025.

But is this unique to the Sonos Ace?

I tried the same thing with the Bose QC 2023 model, and I definitely observed the same issue. It was easy to reproduce.

My Sony WH-1000XM2 from way back in 2017 are still going strong. And they hardly have this effect! I repeatedly tried to bang around a metal knife and fork, and the issue is hardly noticeable. The 'popping' is maybe 5% in reproducibility and intensity versus what I hear on the Bose QC 2023.

I do not have the Sonos Ace to compare.
I also do not own the latest flagship Bose and Sony ANC headphones.

IN CONCLUSION...

Q: Does the Sonos Ace still create 'popping and cracking' noises when subjected to high frequency sounds like metal knives and forks banging together? (Late 2025.)
A: Survey (mostly) says yes.

Q: Is this issue unique to the Sonos Ace?
A: No. A comparable Bose model does the same thing.
