Can Sonos enable native Chromecast and Gemini support on its speakers?

I am using a stereo pair of Era 100 speakers and wanted to ask if Sonos would consider enabling native Chromecast and Gemini support on its speakers.

Native Chromecast support would allow users to cast audio directly from any app that supports casting, without relying on individual app integrations or the Sonos app to initiate playback. This aligns closely with how many users already consume music, podcasts, radio, and streaming content across Android and Google TV ecosystems.

Gemini integration would further position Sonos speakers as everyday smart speakers, extending their role beyond music to voice assistance and home interactions. This would increase long-term reliance on Sonos hardware rather than limiting usage primarily to music playback.

From a practical and adoption point of view, this could:

  • Lower the learning curve for new users

  • Improve interoperability in mixed Android, Google TV, and Sonos households

  • Remove a common purchase hesitation where casting is expected as a baseline feature

  • Encourage more frequent, everyday usage through users’ preferred apps

Many competing speakers already offer native casting, and users increasingly expect this capability by default. Supporting Chromecast and Gemini could help Sonos reach a broader audience while continuing to maintain its premium sound positioning.

Would be keen to hear if this is something Sonos has considered, and if others in the community feel the same.

@Corry P I'd also like to put my name down for support of native Chrome Casting.

It's the one feature that makes me want to move away from Sonos. I know there is a strong push to make the software side rock solid and customer focused, and this is the key feature that Sonos is missing for me.

@Nickmask Thanks for sharing that - good to know others feel the same. Chromecast support would definitely make Sonos feel more flexible for everyday use, especially since people want to use their preferred apps to play music or cast their phone audio directly.

I've been waiting for years (checking every year or so) for Sonos to implement Google Cast support to consider returning to the Sonos ecosystem. I left around five years ago because of it, my main phone is a Pixel and I'm not planning to change to an iPhone just to fully enjoy a few speakers at home. As much as I value good sound quality I value even more usability, and in that sense my current Bose + Nest Home setup works much better, even though I miss the Sonos sound signature.

Odd that you stick around, having not been a Sonos customer for five years, but other viewpoints are always valuable. If I were to guess, based on the seemingly continuous legal actions between the two, Google hasn’t given Sonos the legal authority to implement it. I suppose there could be audio quality reasons, much like why Sonos chose not to implement Bluetooth for so long, but that seems like a much more remote possibility.

It would certainly be more convenient to those of us in the public if Sonos would implement all available forms of ‘casting’, as well as music formats. It’s unfortunate for us that there are legal, cost, and hardware barriers.

What content are you wanting to cast?  As an android user, I’ve never felt the need to use google casting to Sonos. The vast majority of the time I’m using the Sonos app to stream music.  In some rare cases, I may cast from a specific music services app, like Amazon, Pandora, or Spotify, and never required google casting to do so.  On rare occasions I have casted youtube on to my TV(with audio to Sonos Arc).  I have used bluetooth, but that is either away from my wifi network or from non-android devices.  Perhaps there are certain streaming services you use that are not available in the Sonos app? Or you just prefer the streaming services app?

I’m going to disagree on this, as I don’t think Google can legally offer other 3rd party devices to to do Google casting and bar Sonos  from the same.  Google would have to provide the same license, or give a reason why they cannot offer the same license, to Sonos.  For example, I know at one time that Youtube did not allow casting to a device without a screen (maybe still), which would make casting to Sonos not possible.

Honestly, I’m not terribly informed about licensing issues. I am somewhat familiar with music licensing, having worked a bit in that field a few years ago. Convoluted, to say the least. We also dealt with licensing from Dolby, due to our use of 5.1 in our games…thank heavens for the lawyers I worked with. Similarly in an earlier incarnation, where we partnered with NVIDIA to integrate code support for one of their new GPUs…licensing thankfully handled by the lawyers. Fortunately, the code team was able to move forward while the details were being worked out, to my memory.

Legal licensing,  especially in our world today, is an issue that can’t be ignored. That impacts software as much as music. Much to, IMHO, the detriment of us in the public.
