The new app is a piece of XXXX nothing works correctly everything lags it keeps applying my music request to the wrong room, finding my music is a real pain. With so many competitors out there that are as good or maybe better why would one stay with Sonos other than the investment in speakers. I hope they do not screw with the older Sonos 1 app. as it still seems to be ok. If they stop supporting those speakers and or change the app like the Sonos 2 , I believe a lot of users will be disgusted enough to stop using product and move on the another platform. whom ever approved the new app should be fired. and the persons who designed said app needs of find other work. If you haven't guessed I am not happy at all with the Sonos app update.
What reason is there to stay with Sonos
In fact, Sonos is/was such a well-designed and quality plug and play system that finding an equivalent substitute system is not a trivial task. All the direct contenders are proprietary systems and are liable to all the weaknesses and issues such systems can suffer.
Look carefully before you leap.
The only reason to stay is there’s not an easy way forward. For me, it will be a controlled migration as anything else could be costly and potentially more disruptive.
My steps will be:
- damage control - get it working as well as possible using the combination of desktop and 3rd party SonoPhone app. That’s where I am now. I have pretty much 95% functionality, just inconvenient doing it with 3 different apps and volume control is a mess
- freeze purchasing any new components - done
- slow evaluation of alternatives - Bluesound, Wiim, Roon, Heos, Plex, etc. - only tested Plex so far but it hasn’t been great - which could be due to Sonos bugs since Sonos is buggy no matter what. And that’s the bummer when involving 3rd party software to the mix - troubleshooting and finger pointing becomes exponentially more complicated.
I have little faith in SONOS turning this around anytime soon - I still cannot even adjust the volume reliably with their new crummy app. What sort of music system is it where volume control doesn’t work? After over a month and they cannot fix that? Sad.

In the short to medium term they will patch up the current app to ensure that it is stable, fix the bugs and put back the features that they removed.
At some point in the future I will consider alternatives but at this pint in time I cannot afford to replace 13 Sonos speakers across 5 rooms.
