I bought my multiple Sonos speakers to primarily play my CD collection over WiFi from my NAS media box, a Popcorn Hour C200. Worked as expected multiple speakers, stereo speakers, all just worked. Also put some music on a USB stick inserted into my Internet router (Draytek) (actually a backup of my NAS music) and again it just worked, nice as no spinning disk drives to wear out.

 

This really bought my CD collection to life, no longer restricted to lounge HiFi setup and messing around with physical disks and CD player. When decorating, pop Sonos in a protective poly bag and music in room being decorated.

 

Never really bothered with radio or streaming as totally happy listening to my CD’s I have bought.

 

So come update, can no longer listen to MY MUSIC due to SMBv1 network protocol. Not sure my Popcorn Hour can do SMBv2 or even my router or even how to configure….I really don’t give a s*** as it once worked fine, no one hacked my music, no one uploaded viruses, no one streamed my music to Russia. IT JUST WORKED.

 

So what wireless speakers should I be looking to replace my Sonos speakers with, that will work with the setup I have ? Do JBL to WiFi speakers ? Any other makes able to access local files ?

I posted a topic about this very thing and alternatives to Sonos and a reasonable migration path away from Sonos.  The post was deleted.

I would suggest getting onto a vender neutral forum like AVS Forum to look for answers, although so far there are none there.

There are tons of wireless speakers.  Bluesound is one of the closest to what Sonos offers and some say they sound better and have better features.  Heos is built into some audio components.  Apple doesn’t do a great job with a networked library - they want all the stuff to be on your phone, or possibly a Mac which I don’t have.  At least I have not been able to get Apple bits like an Apple TV or Airpods to reliably work with my NAS library.  If a cheap Mac can solve this, I may go for it.

I think they deleted one of the threads that had useful suggestions. I can’t find it in search so maybe it’s just the search. Might be related to the banning of some member(s)? that’s happened recently. Not sure.

 

As a suggestion, if your Sonos speakers are S1 compatible, you could move them to S1 and you will have SMBv1 as before along with a bug free app. You can’t move to S1 in the new app though, maybe they bring it back.

There certainly are rules about what Sonos allows you to post in the forum that they operate. It doesn’t surprise me that, given the uptick in posts, Sonos moderators have less time to be judicious. 

Using a forum paid by Sonos does seem to be an odd avenue to me to suggest alternate company’s products, or legal actions. If I had that inclination, I’d certainly not do so in a company sponsored forum.

With so many sonos OWNERS having issues with their media libraries, this is the perfect place to ask questions of other Sonos OWNERS to see how they are coping. Sonos has their money, no need to clutch pearls over this being a company sponsored forum. Better to help them here than to have them spreading their sonos hate all over Reddit etc, there’s enough of that there already but still.
