Sonos App Behavior (a Plus IMO)

FYI

In the past if a device was powered down or removed the Sonos app (iOS/Android) would still show the device for a few days then it would disappear. That was expected behavior.

I have a special case wherein I have three (3) stereo pairs of portables  (Move 2, Roam 2 and Play). I can only have one set active on my network at a given time; otherwise I’d exceed the max number of 32 devices. Therefore when not being used the other two sets are powered down. 

If not approaching 32 devices (or you have no portables) you may not be aware of the behavior I’m about to describe:

  • The app now shows powered down  devices continuously. That’s not a bad thing...in fact I like it. 
  • Devices removed still remain visible but disappear after a while (3-5 days)

You won’t find any documentation (or at least I can’t) on this behavior. Therefore, I hesitate to call it a feature…just (IMHO) an additional benefit.

    This is the one I remember seeing…

    • Smarter handling of offline products - We tuned up the settings experience for products that go offline:
      • Offline products now stick around in Settings for 3 months instead of disappearing right away, giving you time to reconnect them.
      • Improvements to how bonded sets behave when part of the set drops offline.
      • Added a "hide" option so you can tidy up Settings by removing offline products you don't plan to bring back.

    • For iOS users, enable our Live Activity in App Preferences which re-introduces the ability to control Sonos playback from your Lock Screen, as well as the Dynamic Island.

      It also shows in Android as well. At least in reference to a unit that is powered down. I can see it in my test Android tablet.

        Interesting. I thought that was a feature (?) of leased IP addresses in the router, and the Sonos device would disappear from the router’s DHCP table (and any associated things, like the controller) once the lease was attempted to be renewed. I appear to be mistaken (yet again).

        Reserved or dynamic, leases in the DHCP server have an active lifetime set by that server. Once inactive I'm not seeing a expire/remove date/time option here. Looking at my ISC server I see dynamically assigned but expired leases going back to 6/6/26 my last router firmware update.

          Indeed, I failed with the forum search and with my search engine using the site option set to the forums.

          I see my failure was from not searching the full sonos.com and not looking for offline as the term.

          If my brain continues down this path I may reevaluate AI assistance, hopefully before I develop a favorite Crayola flavor.
