Yesterday the Room I was playing to was at an extremely loud volume.  Fortunately I had Volume Limit set low enough to avoid speaker damage.  The solution was to turn OFF Live Activities in the app and on the controller device, in this case IOS.  It's too easy for me to accidentally press down on the volume up button when I'm grabbing the iPhone.

In the app I went to Account-App Preferences-Live Activity.  Turned it OFF.  This alone does not necessarily disable side button volume control on the iPhone.  I had to also go to iPhone Settings-Apps-Sonos-Live Activities-Allow Live Activities turned that OFF.

Update:  Airplay is still connecting to Sonos.  Working on disabling this.

Further research shows that when I open an app like Sonos, SonoPhone, or Sonify in my Apple Shortcuts the iPhone side volume buttons are activated for Sonos volume control.  This is something I don’t want.  So I have changed the Shortcuts to Open PlayFrame instead which does not activate side volume button control.

Sure would like a setting that disables this hard connection to the iPhone/Pad volume controls.

The volume buttons on the side of my iPhone don’t change my sonos volume level. I’ve tried every thing I can think of. It doesn’t matter if Live Activity is on or off. The volume buttons only change the volume of the phone or what the phone is playing. I must be missing something.

Yes.  I have no idea how that started but it seems to be back to volume buttons controlling the iPhone.  What was odd was when I looked at the Control Panel screen ( pull down from top right ) there would be what looked like AirPlay activity showing what was playing and on which Sonos Room.  It wasn't AirPlay because the small blue icon was missing. There were three Sonos related apps open at the time.  When i swiped all three apps out the volume would no longer control the Sonos speaker and the AirPlay area in the Control Panel then showed "Not Playing”.  The apps I swiped out were Sonos, SonoPhone & Sonify.  Maybe it was Sonify because in my shortcuts that was the app I was opening to see what was playing.  It is also strange that Sonify does not show a queue when playing a playlist that should generate a queue.

UPDATE: Sure enough when i open Sonify the iPhone volume controls are able to control Sonos and the Control Panel AirPlay area shows whats playing in the Sonos Room.

So from what I gather from your post(s) the idiosyncrasies with volume were a byproduct of 3rd apps and not the Sonos app itself.

Correct.  The only app that caused the issue was Sonify.  The reason I liked the Sonify Now Playing screen was the displaying of the volume number to the right of the volume slider.
