Help us make Sonos easier to learn and use?

Hi everyone! Some of you may have seen my post on Reddit yesterday, but I wanted to invite feedback from this group directly on the same topic. Here’s what I posted over there:

For the last couple of months our engineers and designers have been working to improve usability of the app and I wanted to start a conversation here about what we’re up to, and invite your thoughts, long before any changes start showing up – even in our beta channel.

As you know, all too well, over the past year we’ve spent a lot of time digging out from the obvious performance and reliability issues in the “new” app. We’ve made progress but of course that work continues. Recently though we’ve also been asking a different question: even when the app works, does using it make intuitive sense?

To help validate our belief that we had real work to do here, we’ve been in customers’ homes watching them use Sonos. We’ve sat with people while they try to queue up music to a room down the hall. We’ve watched them search for a favorite artist. We’ve read the forums and threads here closely. We’ve run structured usability sessions and informal ones.

Surprising no one, we keep hearing that the core navigation patterns in the app are simply unfamiliar in ways that aren’t helpful. Swipe up gestures. Content cards on top of content cards. Key controls that reveal themselves only after someone tells you where they are. These are design choices that don’t show up in the other music apps people use every day and that mismatch alone creates friction. Even when the app is technically working.

So we’ve been working on a more conventional approach to navigation. Restoring tabbed navigation between key screens. Making search and browse much more straightforward and visible. Eliminating the need to discover hidden gestures. In short, leaning into patterns people already understand rather than asking them to learn ours.

In usability testing, the revised approach is performing really well. People get to their desired end state much faster and with much less confusion. They report feeling more confident about where they are and how to get where they want to go.

Even so, we are not going to flip a switch and surprise everyone with these changes. This will start as an opt in experience within our beta community. When that process yields an exciting result, it will roll out gradually to a bigger audience. Throughout it all, the details will almost surely evolve based on what we learn from the people who choose to try it. I expect this to be a months-long process of refinement rather than a single release moment.

Before any of that starts, I’d really value hearing from the community here.

When you think about navigating the app today, what feels most off to you? Are there things you like?
Where do you feel friction? And where is ease particularly important?
What do you wish behaved more like the other favorite apps you use?

We’re committed to getting this right patiently and methodically, until it feels like something you don’t have to think about.

Thanks, as always, for the candid feedback.

I have a (non catalogued) radio stream i listen too, the url changed slightly (http tp https etc) so i deleted it (as you cant amend it!!) but i cant add the new stream becuase it already exists?  I cant access it on Android or Windows apps but its still assocated with my account somehow.  Ive synced and signed out and checked for updates etc

To get around this i usually just create a new account and start again..  annoying though as this is the most basic functionality - if a user adds something they should be able to manage it?

so yeah, a grands worth of speakers and i end up listening to my local radio on a £30 DAB radio

    Hi,

Please adjust the volume slider to be more more granular, it's so hard to get it right.

Another point, make navigation to the surround stuff easier m not a power user, I just want to switch the system on, with a simplified  menu and more intuitive to help the average user, not sound engineers 😊

Last gripe, I struggle with the app, my partner just hates this, and  can't cope with putting her music on, if I'm out, and her friends come round, she can't use the app at all, frustrating her further with the equipment.

Please make this app intuitive to people who wishes their quality products to work without a degree in physics would be a great step forward.

    Thanks

@Dg7559 Question is, how would Sonos achieve this? What do you think Sonos should change?

I can’t get my wife to let me teach her how to use the app.  She just wants to push a button and music starts playing.  Maybe I need to make her some playlists she can call up using SVC.

How? I won’t argue one way or the other, but where do you feel that the current S2 version doesn’t meet that definition? Specifics would likely help guide Mr. Conrad.

Apart from how S2 screws up loading Amazon Music Unlimited playlist into the queue the app works pretty well, at least on IOS.  Just had to get used to it.  What’s interesting is I have an old phone with the S1 ( orange ) app which I have not attempted to navigate in a long time.  I had to re-learn how to use that old app.

Every “control point” app I’ve ever used has flaws.  Hopefully this thread will help tweak the S2 app.  I have had no issues navigating the app, but occasionally things don’t work correctly.  That’s one thing that needs attention along with usability improvements.

    usability

The user interface is cluttered, I can muddle through it, however not everyone is fluid with tech, what's easy for some isn't for others.

The owner asked what concerns you with the product,  I gave them mine like everybody else; How to achieve this with all the other concerns written here and elsewhere are outside of my knowledge.

Maybe write an internal email to staff, request people who are not technical from their friends, families and invite them in for usability studied, then use that data to think about what could be made better, more intuitive, i dont know..

A usability study done right, that is using members from your target market(s) is almost always good. Picking the wrong members is doomed.

Giving them a few speakers and the App with a list of tasks to accomplish is very revealing compared to trying to use it internally.

Having a list of every App screen and menu and tracking the users as they wander through looking for their solution. Going back and looking at your "never found" screens gives you a big hint you missed something. Think about all the posts we see mad about the pop up and away Group volume controls and how frustrating they are for users. Ask why they don't use the volume controls that don't quickly disappear instead? That would be the ones on the Group screen.

If this is already possible please let me know.  At times I’ll be playing some music on my Arc/Sub/300s then I decide to watch TV.  I do not necessarily clear the queue prior to switching to TV.  At that point I no longer have access to the queue.  It would be nice if, on the app TV page there was a way to access the queue to resume music play rather than having to start over reloading the queue again.
