FYI, Regarding Cost to Ship Sonos or Any Package

I’ve seen the question posted in the community regarding “how much does it cost to have a Sonos package shipped” primarily involving international shipping. Calling Sonos Sales may not provide the immediate answer you hope for. Sonos Sales; if able to help,  may have to contact “shipping logistics” for a definitive answer. So be patient.

I live in the US and therefore shipping provided by Sonos is at “no cost” (a least not as a line-item on the invoice).😉 Below is my “logistical consultation without compensation” regarding shipping cost calculation.

Knowing the weight of a product is not the complete answer for shipping purposes. Actual cost to ship products like Sonos (or any product) is a combination of:

Weight

  • Product
  • Packaging materials

Box Dimensions:

  • Length
  • Width
  • Height
  • Girth (in some case such as with a soundbar)

The aforementioned is termed as “Dimensional Weight”. The final determining cost factor is “distance” from point of origin to final destination (i.e. delivery). Distance may be calculated as a “flat” or “variable” rate depending upon the shipper/carrier relationship.

For example:

  • if you ship a product that weighs one (1) pound in a box that measures 20 x 12 x 10 the cost of shipping will be based upon the box measurements (i.e. Dimensional Weight).

In the above example shipping a box of foam may cost the same as shipping a product that weighs ten (10) pounds in a box with the aforementioned dimensions to the same destination.

Shippers take into account how much space in a truck or container a package will occupy (ergo Dimensional Weight). Larger packages (although more profitable in some scenarios) also occupy more space restricting the number of packages that can be loaded.

The point being that actual shipping cost may not be readily available via Sonos Sales as they are not the logistics department that’s actually responsible for shipping.

 * For international shipments a “Customs Fee” is applicable. Fortunately the fee is handled in the background by the commercial shipper (Sonos in this case) so most of us never see it as a line-item.

Hey @AjTrek1, welcome back!

Thank you once again for a very detailed and informative thread.

I never actually thought about it, but what you are pointing out makes sense to me personally.

Nice read! 🙂
