Why don't SONOS Updates ever work?

As with most folks here, I’m mystified as to how poorly software update works.   I’ve had Sonos equip for almost 10 years and it’s been 10 years of pain, with software updates constantly failing.

Hi @planetrich, welcome to the Sonos Community!

I’m sorry to hear you’re running into issues updating your system. I’d be happy to help if you can provide me with some more information.

When attempting to update, are you receiving any error messages? If so, what is the error code?

Most update errors can be resolved by a reboot of the system, so I’d recommend the following steps:

  1. Reboot your network.
  2. Reboot your Sonos system.
  3. Close and re-open theSonos app.
  4. Retry the update.

If the above doesn’t resolve the issue, then I’d recommend temporarily wiring a speaker to your router via an Ethernet cable and trying again. If you’re still having issues updating, then please reach out to our support team for further assistance as they have the tools available to troubleshoot this issue with you.

I hope this helps!

Hi Everyone,

If you are still struggling this might be a solution for your updating/connecting problem.

I’m still using the SONOS 1 (ONE) speakers myself so I cannot confirm this for any newer models.

Make sure your are using/connecting to the 2.4 GHz frequency bandwidth of your Router.
Otherwise it won’t work!

If you are not sure what frequency you are connected to, login to your router or try to find the specs of your router on Google. Also there might be a chance you need to configure this manually/separately in your router (which was the solution for me). And with this I mean you have to have 2 separate SSID’s (1 for 2.4 Ghz and 1 for 5Ghz)

This is only an example. Your router settings might be different!

By default my router had only 1 WiFi network (SSID) , probably 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz mixed, and because of that my updating kept failing.

I spent almost half a day finding out that this was the problem and was almost at the point of breaking something.

-------

ps. You might need to reset your SONOS device before you do the steps from above,You do that by
1) Disconnecting the power of for 5 seconds.
2) Hold the ‘>||’ button and then plug the power back in.
3) Keep holding the ‘>||’ button all this time until it will change to a blinking green color
4) And then do the setup!

I hope this helps you on your way!

Cheers!
