volume rollercoaster

Just got rid of my Bose system because I wanted WiFi. I’m going bonkers constantly changing the volume for each song. There is absolutely zero consistency.  Please tell me there is a fix.  This has never happened with any other speaker I’ve had.  It’s across the board with my roam, Arc & 300 individually.  I can’t find any setting in the app to gain consistency between songs.
just so it’s clear when a playlist changes songs in a que the volume might get super loud or super soft. It never plays from one song to the next without a level variation.  The actual setting doesn’t change, but the listening level changes. So it might stay on a 28, but that 29 will vary greatly.
I’m really starting to question my decision.

thanks for any suggestions.

oh - mostly Amazon Music through Sonos app - I rarely use the Sonos music but it happens on their radio as well.

I never had to adjust my volume before.
so the only differences - playing via WiFi instead of Bluetooth

Previously you would have played via the native Amazon Music App that has a loudness normalisation feature:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=TgG1d8mPjGwf885hRP

If Bluetooth is used with the Amazon Music App using Sonos speakers you will see same functionality as you did with your Bose, ie playing same content from same source using same connection method.

The Amazon Music Sonos Service does not have this feature (yet), I expect it will come, if Amazon gets enough requests for this feature.

Loudness difference will be more noticeable if you have tracks on playlist that span different genres, eg jazz vs heavy rock

Ahhh I didn’t think of airplay. Will do. Will also submit request to Amazon.

As other dude said, it’s the source, not the Sonos. Try turning on Night Mode, that seems to smooth things out for me.

Again, just try turning on Night Mode, it may solve the issue without having to resort to streaming from your phone.

There is no industry standard regarding how loud things should play. If you shuffled the tracks played on a multi-disc CD player you would have variation from disc to disc. The online music services tend to maintain the disc levels -- hence the variation from track to track in your playlists.

I have no experience with the current BOSE product. They may be compressing the music. Compression will result in more constant playback levels from track to track and disc to disc. Music purists don’t usually appreciate compression and SONOS tends to favor purists. Compression can be very useful when playing in a car or out on a noisy street. Pop music, which is often played in a car or out on the street is often compressed on the CD. It has been shown that this sells more sales.

Based on comments that I’ve read in this community, you may have better success with Apple Music. I have no personal experience with Apple Music.

If you have a choice when selecting online music avoid the Hires versions because these tend not to be compressed.
