Unable to Connect to AirPlay on First Attempt

I’m having a super frustrating issue with my Era 300s stereo paired to a Sub Mini. Every time I AirPlay from my phone, I get the spinning wheel followed by an “Unable to connect to [room]” error. If I tap the speaker again, it connects instantly and after that, it reconnects fine until the next day when the problem repeats.

Here’s what I’ve tried with no lasting fix:

  • Rebooting my phone, router, and modem
  • Hard resetting the speakers and the app
  • Swapping routers (ISP issued router > Linksys Velop > Eero Pro 6E)
  • Setting DHCP reservations
  • Calling Sonos support (they just suggested another reset)

The weird part is no other AirPlay 2 devices on my network have this problem (HomePods, Apple TVs, LG TV, JBL soundbar) and it’s not isolated to my phone either because I can reproduce this issue on all iOS and macOS devices in the house.

It’s not the end of the world, but waiting 20–30 seconds every day to stream music adds up to a very frustrating experience. And it’s just so annoying that every method of interacting with my speakers comes with a compromise. AirPlay is convenient, but unreliable and the Sonos app is more stable in recent months, but you lose lock screen and volume button controls. Please help!!

Hi @rajas et al

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

I am sorry to hear of this issue you are having with being unable to connect AirPlay to your Sonos speakers on the first attempt - it does sound annoying.

I recommend you get in touch with our technical support team who have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your Sonos system and what it reports - I understand that you have done so already, but if you quote your existing case number, the next agent will see the steps that have already been tried that do not help, and will move further on with the investigation.

I hope this helps.

Hi, I came across this thread when looking into the exact same problem I have with my Eras and Unifi network.

Does this RSTP to STP fix applies when all the Sonos speakers are wireless and using my own Wifi, or is that just when at least 1 is wired (so using SonosNet and not my Wifi) ?

Hi, I’m using a Unifi UCG Ultra with Era 100 and Roam speakers. I’ve tried enabling STP and IGMP snooping, but nothing has helped. I still get an AirPlay error on the first attempt every time. It’s been driving me crazy for the past year since I upgraded to the new Sonos speakers. I’ve finally decided to ditch Sonos and switch to Denon, which works flawlessly with AirPlay.

Yea, I think this RSTP thing only applies if you have at least 1 wired device. It didn’t change anything in my case.

One thing I have noticed though (but more tests needed to confirm): my Eras are being switched off every night, and it looks like the problem doesn’t occur when only 1 is being switched back on the next day. It’s when I switch them all on that it starts.

I don’t think the problem is that you turn off the Eras nor with Unifi system. I believe the issue is that the new wireless Sonos speakers enter some kind of deep sleep mode and don’t respond immediately to AirPlay. AirPlay works fine for a few hours, but the problem always appears in the morning after the Sonos speakers haven’t been used for at least six hours.

Suffering the same in my Move 2. I’ll follow this thread and try to know more about this RSTP thing 😅

Same issue here.

I did the RSTP to STP switch and didn’t notice a difference with my Move 2, but disabling Sonos App > Settings > Move 2 > WiFi Power Save seems to be working for me after 2 days of testing.
