for trueplay calibration check your apple device if the microphone is not obstructed by dust or other dirt that would prevent signal reception.
also check for apple system updates

Thanks everyone, all sorted. It was my Bluetooth hearing aids that were interfering!

That might be something worth adding to the Trueplay guide as more and more of us age out to the point we need hearing aids.
