the Music Library “fix”

I, like every other Sonos user, lost access to my beloved local music library curated from my personal “hard copy” musical collection and playlists when the new app was released.  However, I was a lot better of that most because I had an old iPad with the “old” S2 app which was still able to play from my library.  Every time it offered to update I refused point blank for that very reason.

Today however it appears that a device update has rendered the old app useless because it is now no longer able to control my Sonos speakers.  I consider this an almost underhand and sneaky way to “force” me to use an app which no longer serves the purpose I originally intended it for and renders my expensive speakers a lot less attractive than they were.

A fix for this was hinted at being available “mid June” but still no sign.

PLEASE, PLEASE, when will this be fixed?  And if the answer really is never, please come clean so I can attempt to offload my speakers on to someone who doesn’t need it want the facility I bought them for in the first place!

I’m on the 80.07.05-release+20240825.fd7bb7c version and I managed to add my music library from my Synology NAS.

It plays well, but no album art at all, either when browsing the library nor in the playing mode.

Also, I have a strange behaviour when listening to radio, when stopped, the artwork is correctly displayed but disappears when I start the radio; it comes back as soon as I hit the stop button. Anyone else having the same behaviour?

Update for the fun : I have a small app that I wrote for the fun in Javascript using the upnp api, and it shows the album art perfectly when on the official app no luck 😕

We received an email with the subject “Highlights from the recent app updates” from Sonos today, claiming that the most recent Android app update should allow searching and playing from the music library. However, our library doesn’t show up in the app. We’re still on version 80.07.05.

While looking up the app in the Google Play Store we stumbled on a button to try a “web app” which is available here. While it doesn’t show our music library, either, it does seem to know about our Sonos playlists. Trying to view any of the playlists results in a “server error”, though.

Has anybody had any luck getting their music library and/or playlists to work in this web app?

@crilo What were your experiences after adding your NAS music library to the app? Did it stick or is it still hit and miss? Do you have Sonos playlists that include songs from your NAS, and if yes, can you view and edit them?

@The Krollmanns, my music library is still working (with no album art)

I can’t visualize / edit the playlist when playing from the library, but I can use the ‘play next’ or ‘add at the end of the list’ actions, they work but I can’t visulaize the playlist which is not the best user experience.

At least I can play all my library (it seems that nothing is missing) without drops or lag.

I guess we have to wait until a future release to make it better (fingers crossed). Sonos clearly didn’t do a good job with this app and this is sad, hopefully they will not go completely dark as I have all my house filled with Sonos boxes and the hardware really rocks.

@The Krollmanns finally got my music library working. I turned off all speakers but one to see if the music library worked, luckily it did. I turned my sub back on and the music library immediately stopped working. I turned off the sub and restarted a Play 1. The music library continued working. I restarted the other Play 1 and the music library continued working. When I started the sub again the music library stopped working.

So, I factory reset the sub, added it back into the system and the music library seems to be working correctly, albeit without album art.

@marner

Quite strange… but congrats you got it solved. Thx for sharing! 👍🏻

@marner That is some impressive troubleshooting, kudos to you for figuring that out. We should never have to jump through hoops like that to restore basic functionality like playing songs from locally stored files.

Our whole situation changed when our Windows PC sharing our music library died two weeks ago. We now no longer have a music library SMB share that is constantly available on our network (unless we invested in a NAS or some other solution like an SMB server on a Linux or Raspberry device), and the SMB sharing functionality of our WiFi router is no longer supported since it's SMBv1 only. We are currently experimenting with a Spotify subscription, to reproduce our music library content and recreate some of our Sonos playlists there. It's been working somewhat ok in the Sonos app, but with occasional hiccups, like queues that are emptied or disappear, speakers that are ungrouped or don't play music, just more of the unpredictable behaviour of the app that we all struggle with these days.

@The Krollmanns Disappointing that.  I hope you and Sonos get the Spotify solution sorted.

Why do I have more confidence in you than Sonos? 🤣

I have found that I need to add/remove a Music Library to the web app independantly of my iPhone/iPad apps.  Once done, the library appears in Web app home page and I am able to browse and select tracks to play.   I still have the indexing issues (Multiple entries for compilation albums) and can’t create playlists.
