Sonos Controller - Duplicate Album Titles

Just an update to a previously reported issue Duplicate album names queued together | Sonos Community.  I have this album on my music library (apologies for some of the titles, but that’s the way it is):

File list for album tracks

The album is listed three times in the controller:

Selecting any one of the duplicate titles shows only one track:

These results are the same on the Windows, Android, and web controllers.  I reindexed before collecting this info. I should add that queueing any one of the duplicate titles only adds one track to the queue.

I emailed this info to Sonos support.

Can you send me the info on those two albums that show duplicates?  I want to possibly purchase at least one to see if I also get duplicates after an index.

...

Hi,

Here are the current duplicate titles that show in my Albums list:

Erroneous duplicate titles in SONOS albums list

The first three were ripped from CD, and the fourth was copied from vinyl.

I think those are the only ones I have right now.

But don’t waste your money - their ‘fame’ is fleeting… 😉

As a test, I removed those four albums from my music library and re-indexed.  Here is a new false duplicate that showed up after that:

Another SONOS false duplicate

Interesting to note that it was only listed twice.

And just to confirm, I restored the four albums I had removed and re-indexed again.  Here is the above album now listed correctly:

Above duplicate now indexed correctly

fwiw, I don’t think this is a controller issue, I think it is the player firmware.

strangely, I get this issue only with grateful dead records ;-)

Well, that’s just it. There is no one particular album displaying this problem. All you have to do is rename a folder, any folder, and re-scan. Now the albums displaying this problem no longer do. So, there was no problem with those albums. But a whole new set of albums are now displaying the problem. Any time the library is updated, the albums displaying the problem change.

Indeed.  As a simple test, I made a trivial change to the name of one sub-folder.  Before and after:

Music sub-folder renamed

I posted a little while ago about four false duplicate titles in my Albums list.  After making the above change and re-indexing, I still have four duplicates.  Three of them are the same but one from before is gone, replaced by another.

Specifically, ‘Still Crazy After All These Years’ is no longer duplicated:

An album title no longer duplicated

But this one is new:

A new false duplicate title

Finally, just to confirm, I renamed those two subfolders back the way they were.  Here is the above album title, now listed correctly:

False duplicate now gone

Been doing all the above stuff during breaks from working on income taxes. Will have to find some other break activity. 😄  Cheers!

Obviously, it’s super annoying when these kinds of regressions take so long to get fixed.

HOWEVER, a cursory glance at the Web Controller, which I have used once in the last few years, there is a real mess of duplicates.  There are no options how to group anything either.  It’s not a big issue for me but it is inconsistent.

FWIW, I painfully checked the web controller and see the same four duplicate titles I have been posting about. But the fact that there is no Album Artist listed with each album title makes albums that happen to have the same title look like duplicates.

Not a fan of the web controller...

Painful is the way I would describe it too. It was obviously not designed for local music library use.

Well, it was designed that way originally, but in the last few years many new bugs have cropped up, and I think music library used to be a “primary use case” and now it is a “secondary use case”. Since most ppl (not me) use a streaming service of some sort.

What kind of bugs?  Asking just for awareness.

I agree with the thought that the music library is probably not much of a priority for them, and I’m starting to look elsewhere for an alternative.

And I do use a streaming service, but I’m not willing to part with the many vinyl albums I have copied, no longer possessing the originals, that are not, AFAIK, ‘commercially available’ on places like Pottyfi.  😮

For a while the library didn’t work at all with S2. Then there were bugs where songs on compilations would each come out as their own album. Now this duplicate album bug. I actually switched to SonoPad when they put out that version of the controller that didn’t work any more, and now almost never use the controller on ios. I do use the mac controller sometimes….
