Some radio stations not playing – only TuneIn ads (custom URL support removed)

Hello Sonos Team and Community,

I own multiple Sonos speakers (including One SL) and have been a loyal user for years. Recently, I can no longer play Radio Rock (Finland) on Sonos. Instead of the station, I only get “Welcome to TuneIn” and ads looping endlessly.

Here’s what I’ve tried:

  • Removed and re-added TuneIn (New) in the Sonos app
  • Logged in with my TuneIn account and added Radio Rock as a favorite
  • Rebooted speakers, reset network, cleared cache
  • Tried Sonos desktop app and mobile app
  • Verified that the station works in TuneIn’s own app

Nothing works. Previously, I could add a custom stream URL to Sonos and bypass TuneIn issues, but Sonos removed that feature in recent updates. This leaves me with no way to listen to a major Finnish radio station on a multi-thousand-euro system.

This is unacceptable. Please:

  1. Fix TuneIn integration for Radio Rock and similar stations
  2. OR restore the ability to add custom radio stream URLs in the Sonos app

Many users in Finland and other regions face the same problem. Removing custom URL support without providing an alternative breaks a core use case for Sonos.

Thank you for acknowledging this issue and providing a timeline for a fix.

So this might be a Rock Radio problem after all? Or a rights problem, since one of the posters is listening to Finnish radio in Switzerland? Could people listening in Finland maybe check if their country is set right on their profile on the Sonos website?

I must say I find the subject heading a bit misleading. It is still possible to ad a url via TuneIn, so technically it has been moved, not removed. And I have read here is the way a custom url is represented in the Sonos app leaves a bit to be desired.

edit: according to the TuneIn status page TuneIn has no outage, see https://status.tunein.com, but (German) Radio Bob got me the feared ad loop in the Netherlands the first time I tried - from the Sonos app and Google Assistant. Tried the (Spanish) Flaix FM using the TuneIn search function in the Sonos app and that worked. Radio Bob via search too and now that works (and with Assistant too).

From search I also get Radio Rock. Is this the right radio station? They are playing French rock now…..

Unfortunately this is different Radio Rock that I reported. The issue is with finnish Radio Rock. They have somehow limited the possibility to listen to their station so couldn’t e.g. find direct stream url that could be added to Sonos.

Only way for me to listen Radio Rock has been to either use Radio Player app on Mac or web service supla.fi and airplay from there to Sonos system. A bit difficult though.

Interestingly now that I tested, Radio Rock works again using Sonos RadioPlayer integration so all good again, at least for now.
