Replacement NAS question -Sonos S1

Can anyone advise on this please?

I have a lot of Sonos components - two Connect:Amps, 4 Play 1s and 3 Play 3s.

Everything is running on Sonos S1 as most of them won’t support S2, and all my music files (about 50,000) live on a 10 year old Buffalo Linkststion Duo LS-WXL NAS

The NAS also has video and movie files that are accessed by the various TVs around the house

The whole home network is wired so nothing, including the Sonos, is wireless (except for iPads etc).

It looks like my NAS is failing - I’m still working out if it’s a failed drive which would be easy to replace or if it’s the whole unit. If it’s the whole unit that needs replacing then I can do that but my question for anyone here is, what replacement NAS do it get?

I need it to run with Sonos S1 or I’d have to replace my entire and expensive Sonos system, which I don’t want to do as there’s nothing wrong with it.

Im not en expert in these things but I gather there may be an issue with SMB versions with a new NAS and Sonos S1.

Can anyone advise on what the best options are please?

@PhilJW

Only buy a 2025 model Synology NAS at this point in time if you are willing to only use Synology branded drives. Synology drives command a higher price point.

I understand that they’ve now backed down on this

Hi Everyone

So I thought Id managed to rescue my old Buffalo NAS but……….nope! Its now failed again…..

The drives in were very old so I replaced them and it was functioning fine for a couple of monghs, but is now showing the same error as before. So time for a new one I think…..

Can anyone advise though that as I have two brand new drives in my failed Buffalo is it possible to switch those into a new NAS - even one of a different make - assuming its compatible?

Would all the files still be there or woould I have to reformat the drives and start from scratch?

Usually reformat as the RAID implementations may differ.

Usually easy enough to do a file transfer over Ethernet, just did that here going from a PC server to a Raspberry Pi based one.

Is the Buffalo completely gone or can you backup the data to an external drive or external drive connected to a computer?

I have a complete back up (maybe Im paranoid as it backs up monthly as standard but the minute I see a warning telling me the array is degrading I make another one just in case) so that shoudnt be an issue.

Im just loathed to discard two almost brand new drives which Im sure - Id hope - are absolutely fine.

Im looking at the Synology 225+ as a replacement (Ive never been too happy with Buffalo’s support frankly) which I assume Ill have to enable SMB v1 on so my old Sonos Connect Amps will work, so if anyone has any better recommendations or advice that I shouldnt get that as replacement can you please let me know?

Many thanks to everyone for all your help in this.

Just make sure the NAS will allow you to use your drives and not require "certified" ones.

Unless you want a  Synology NAS for a specific reason they aren’t 3rd party drive friendly. Click the link:

Ah…..someone earlier in the thread said Synology had backed down on this but maybe that’s not the case!

Thanks for pointing it out.

im not wedded to Synology so if anyone has any other recommendations they would be gratefully received.

What Synology says today and what the device you get shipped is configured for may not be the same. Maybe a firmware update would allow other drives on something with the old configuration that had been sitting on the vendor's shelf for a while.

Pain in the neck to have to check, more pain to be surprised.

Do a search on NAS Reviews, I spent a couple evenings deciding what I wanted. (Ended up being not a NAS)
