Hi,

Do you know if Sonos will support Qobuz Connect ?

The Qobuz app has some features that the Sonos  app does not…

Thanks.

And what is this?

How to use TIDAL Connect?

In the TIDAL app, open the Now Playing screen while playing a track
On the Now Playing screen, select the output device icon
Choose a speaker compatible with TIDAL Connect from the list.

As mentioned in my previous reply - that’s “direct control” for Sonos. Not Tidal Connect.

This is why it says “Sonos” and not “Tidal Connect” under each of the speaker names.

I don't understand the difference between Tidal Connect and Direct control.

For me, it's the same outcome. I select a piece of music and a broadcaster, and I listen directly from the Tidal app

“Sonos has an open protocol anyone can use” The Sonos SMAPI was behind an NDA wall for years, cost money to access, and even after they “opened” it in 2020 it’s a pain in the ass. Almost nobody uses it except a couple of tiny services. Real-world proof: Tidal, Deezer, and Qobuz all tried and eventually ditched it for their own Connect solutions that actually work well.

Where do you get this nonsense?

SMAPI has never cost a dime to access it. Why is it a pain in the ass, exactly? Did you ever see the Rhapsody music API?? That was the definition of a pain in the ass, and one of the reasons Sonos created SMAPI in the first place.

A HUNDRED AND THIRTY THREE services use it (see https://support.sonos.com/en-us/services), an order of magnitude more support than any other hardware streaming device.

Tidal, Deezer and Qobuz all use SMAPI, they haven’t “ditched it for their own”.

Answer from Tidal :

The "Direct Control" feature on Sonos means you can start playback from a compatible service's app (like Tidal or Spotify) to your Sonos speakers without using the Sonos app. You'll see an icon or button for Sonos as the audio destination. "Tidal Connect" also allows you to stream music from the Tidal app to compatible devices, but it's a Tidal-specific technology that works with certain audio products now including Sonos. Both methods control playback through the Tidal app, but "Direct Control" is a more general term for services used, while "Tidal Connect" is specific to Tidal.

Come on Sonos, add support for Qobuz connect already. I'm waiting for it to ditch Spotify at last!

(Oh and SVC for Qobuz too). 🙏

Sonos doesn’t have access to Qobuz’s software, Qobuz would have to incorporate the direct music control API Sonos has already written.

SVC, however, would be a good Sonos request.

Reading people argue about this is so silly. I wish y’all wouldn’t.

I think the majority of Sonos users prefer avoiding using the Sonos app to find music. Each streaming service’s app provides a much better experience for their own service. Sadly, at the moment, Sonos is not prioritizing incorporating Qobuz connect (from my understanding the ball is in Sonos’ court).

My hope is that with tons of people jumping ship from Spotify due to their partnering with ICE and alignment with the war machine on top of paying artists next to nothing for their music, and moving to more ethical alternatives such as Qobuz, that we will see Sonos reconsider their priority on integration. Fingers crossed!!

Until then, I’m using a Wiim device connected to a Sonos Connect with autoplay enabled to give me the illusion of having direct control. The major downside to this is audio quality. The audio is going from digital to analog back to digital between the Wiim and Sonos Connect, and the Connect isn’t encoding using high resolution audio. So when I just want the convenience of using the Qobuz app, I compromise on quality. When I want the quality, I use the Sonos app. It’s not great, but it’s carrying me through this annoying period.

Please tell all your friends to switch to Qobuz so we can speed this along!! 😁

The ball for adding music services, either to the Sonos app or connecting to Sonos via their own app, is NEVER in Sonos' court.  Sonos supplies an API for both usages, it is wholly up to the service to implement their service using the API's.  Matter of fact, due to the terms of service, Sonos couldn't unilaterally add a service if they wanted to.  See the link below:

Strange that all of these mom and pop hi-fi brands work with  Qobuz Connect, despite ‘not having access to Qobuz’s code base’. A cynic might say that Sonos don’t want people with a first rate high-res audio service bypassing their terrible app. Maybe I don’t understand ‘how it works’ for all of these?
