Sonos app on Mac

I’m getting a message on my MacBook that the Sonos app will soon need to be upgraded because support for apps built for the Intel processors are being phased out. I have Sonos app version 17.2 and MacOS 26.4.1. Is a newer version of the Sonos app available?

Prior to the upcoming MacOS release previous versions of MacOS used “Rosetta”

Here’s an AI Overview”

  • "Rosetta" most commonly refers to Apple's translation software enabling Intel-based apps to run on Apple silicon (M1/M2/M3 chips). It works by automatically translating code during installation, allowing for immediate, responsive performance. It is crucial for compatibility but will be phased out in future macOS versions.

Sonos has decided not to recode the MacOS app to work with Apple silicon. Sonos actually started stripping the desktop app of functionality (i.e. setup and others functions) from MacOS and Windows several years ago. Eventually, the desktop app will be phased out on Windows as well. The Web-Based app is the eventual replacement.

Well this answer is no longer needed now that Sonos has reversed course on making the Desktop App work natively with Apple Silicon. 😂😂😂

Regarding your post…there isn’t a “legacy S2” issue. Issue implies there is a problem of sorts which there isn’t.

As you stated memory is what will determine if some S2 capable products will be able to process new features that maybe introduced at some point in time. If those products can’t process those new features they will still function as they do today.

Memory is finite meaning you can’t just introduce more memory to accommodate new features. Also the processor inside may also play a factor.

Adding memory to electronics has become something of a past practice that is no longer allowed. For example today when you order a laptop computer you must decide how much memory you want. You can’t add more memory afterwards.

Sonos can’t / won’t cram more memory into its speakers based upon future needs 5 years or more down the road. The deciding factor in most cases is cost and also the unknown of what features will be created.

Bottomline there’s no Legacy S2 issue just normal attrition for any product due to tech advancements.

play.sonos.com is good for streaming services. What about those of us who own a lot of music files on our hard drive and use the Sonos desktop currently to broadcast to all Sonos speakers (multiple generations). Using airplay will only work on recently purchased speakers. I have a fair amount of investment in Sonos speakers throughout my home and most of them are not airplay enabled.

The web app isn’t great for local music libraries. But, as mentioned earlier in this thread, Sonos released apple silicon versions of the desktop controllers.

  • macOS: native Apple Silicon support: If you've seen a message about Apple removing Rosetta 2, this one's for you. The Sonos app on macOS now runs natively on Apple Silicon, so no more Rosetta needed.
