A friend just set up Sonos at their home with 4 play ones. Should I not be able to play my music from my app when at their home?

You should be able, assuming you've downloaded the app, and define where the music is coming from. But any controller would work, once it's connected to the Sonos system.

You must connect to their system with your app. After connecting to their wifi, open the app and choose to connect to an existing system.

However, even though it is your app it will show their services not yours.
