Question

CBC Radio on Sonos

CBC Music has been broken since the app update. I really miss the music streams that used to work perfectly before — I’ve been checking regularly to see if the issue has been fixed, but now even the live channels (CBC One and CBC Music) won’t load.

It’s disappointing that we’re heading into another Christmas without access to the music that’s been part of Canadian tradition for so many of us. It feels like Sonos has forgotten its Canadian users. Please fix this — it’s long overdue.

Good day Missawn - how are you?  I am from Canada/Port Hope, Ontario and I am able to play all of the CBC stations.  I even use CBC Radio One for my alarm in the morning to wake me up.  What are the issues?  Are you seeing that when you play a station it just stops and starts?  Or are you getting an error?  I assume from your note that you indicate “since the app update” that you are using the latest Sonos application on either iPhone or Android - if this is the case, are you completely up to date for App and Firmware updates?  Back to my original ask, just starting and stopping - if that is the case, clear your most recent searches and plays, and also delete all of your favored CBC stations and re-add them by searching for CBC.

See some screenshots below - you can find most stations under myTuner, however, I typically search under Sonos Radio and then re-add them as favorites.

Just showing the CBC hits during search and it playing in my office at home.  Here is a screenshot of CBC One Radio as my alarm:

Again, I would ensure you are completely up-to-date, clear your recently played items (if you sometimes use this area to play a radio station) and redo your favorites for CBC.

I am currently listening to CBC Music Toronto and they are playing really old classical Xmas tunes.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Derek

Is there a reason why you link to CBC through Sonos Radio (which seems to be the same as TuneIn Radio, with ads)? Is it because linking directly through CBC is intermittently functional and problematic?

Also, your response doesn’t address the much-missed CBC Music streams that were available before the app update and heavily used by me (and others who’ve mentioned the same issue on the community forums).

Good morning Missawn - I choose Sonos Radio more out of preference.  I only hear the beginning ad for Tune in when I engage the station - nothing after that - any ads after that are CBC and Canadian ads that I would normally hear on Radio.  After checking out the community for a bit on this issue as you indicated, I think I finally understand the issue - sorry for misunderstanding initially - I believe you are referring to CBC as a Service which after the app update just shows this:

What I can see from other community posts, is that CBC has been working with Sonos, however, it is yet to be resolved.  I saw this same issue with Mixcloud for many months where it would not show any of the user’s profile - such as favorites, playlists….etc - that finally did get resolved.

I will actually take the time today and report this through the chat channel with Sonos and see if they can log it as a defect.  Like any issue that is deemed possibly a defect, the more the merrier on people reporting it in either through chat or a phone call will heighten it’s priority or urgency on getting fixed.

As for a workaround, I did the following on an iPhone and hopefully it can work for you:

  1. Installed CBC Listen as an application
  1. Signed into it with my account
  2. I started listening “Q” with Tom Power as this is one of my favorites
  3. Then from my iPhone, I chose to cast to one of my Sonos Speakers and then group to multiple if I want to hear it in multiple rooms or whatever I choose.
  4. See images below

I hope this helps and I will give it a shot on reporting this issue today to Sonos through their Chat and update here once done.

Thanks

Derek

Well, I just closed out a chat with Sonos - issue is already on their radar and being investigated - no ETA yet - they did provide me a case # - they also did provide the same work around as I outlined above.

Thanks

Derek

Yes, this is part of the problem. The other issue is the disappearance of the music streams. These are CBC Music streams available on CBC Gem that used to be available Sonos before the update. I greatly prefer the music streams over the radio because there is no talking or ads.

Thanks Missawn for the clarification - this is definitely being looked at by Sonos - again, same scenario happened with MixCloud.  Another workaround if you are a Windows PC person is to use the S2 version on a PC - the ability to see CBC Radio One, CBC Music on Air & CBC Music Streams are present - I often use all 3 versions - Windows, Webapp and Mobile - I am not sure for MAC users, someone else here in the community may be able to chime in.  Just based on the downloads link at Sonos, it looks like S2 is available for Mac as well.

Downloads | Sonos

Screenshots of S2 and what I believe is what you want to have back in the Sonos App:

If you are not a PC user, then casting from your mobile device would be your best bet for now, either through CBC Listen or CBC Gem.

Thanks

Derek

As one who has intermittently experienced this problem for the past year or so and participated in a few other discussions about it in these forums I’d like to point out that that Sonos has been informing customers both here and in support calls that they’re aware of the issue and are working on it for at least eight months. That’s getting a little stale. Yes, there are workarounds, but they have annoying ads or are more cumbersome than the Sonos CBC service.

Thanks Toolio - fingers crossed they will get this resolved soon - I am not quite sure about the ads - they wouldn’t be related to Sonos if you are playing directly from the CBC source with a login (CBC Listen & CBC Gem) via casting.  As for directly playing any of the CBC Radio One stations in Sonos - especially the one I have setup for my alarm - only advert I ever hear is the TuneIn one when it first starts.  So, yes, that is still there as I don’t pay a subscription for Sonos Radio, but, I do have a login.  I do have a login for TuneIn as well, but, don’t pay for a subscription - not sure if that is possibly making a difference.

Since this is a community, I wouldn’t expect the support teams to monitor or update here on specific posts - I think the true tally of incidents reported into/through the phone and chat mediums is where it becomes visible - I really do think that will heighten the priority and urgency.  From what I can see, there is and has been quite a bit of activity on the CBC issues in the community. Hopefully folks will also turn that into calls and or chats into the Sonos Help Desk Support teams.

If I hear anything from the support call I logged on this issue, I will definitely share.

Also, for what it’s worth - I mentioned this previously - Mixcloud also had a very similar issue with profiles (favorites, playlists ….etc missing) - a few users reported it into the community but then we started to hit the support teams with getting tickets or cases logged - it took a while but it eventually was sorted out through discussions between Sonos and Mixcloud.  I am pretty sure that the same thing is happening between Sonos and CBC.

Thanks

Derek

Hi Derek. Thanks for your response.  I was referring to TuneIn when I mentioned the ads--one of the alternative methods of playing CBC stations. I have quite a few alternative ways to play my favourite CBC stations, including through my Roon software that connects to Sonos speakers and, of course, all the other methods mentioned in these discussions. However nothing, including casting, is as simple as using the Sonos app (when it works), so I’ll be quite happy when I’m convinced the problem has been solved. As for Sonos staff, they have commented in discussions threads about CBC in the past. I recall being informed here about six months ago that Sonos is aware of the problem and are working on it. I have also contacted support by telephone and been told the same thing. I split my time between Brazil and Canada, so I can only call from Canada without jumping through hoops. I am in Brazil at the moment.
